  2. Texas Law Physical Education • State law requires that at least 50 percent of a PE course (on a weekly basis) comprise actual student physical activity at a moderate or vigorous level, while meeting the needs of students of all ability levels. • Additionally, districts must establish goals that include class-size ratios small enough to ensure student safety. If a district establishes class-size ratios exceeding 45-to-1, the district must specifically identify how student safety will be ensured. Physical Activity Requirements State law/rules require all students enrolled in full-day prekindergarten, kindergarten or grades 1- in an elementary school setting to participate in structured physical activity for a minimum of either 30 minutes daily or 135 minutes weekly in a TEKS-based physical education class or a TEKS-based structured activity, including structured recess.

  3. CATCH activities at the elementary and middle school level are TEK specific and fully engages all students. CATCH lessons are taught in collaboration with the MISD P.E. curriculum. • CATCH has turned the tide against childhood obesity by transforming schools and after-school centers into health-promoting environments. The core elements of CATCH include: physical activity programming, nutrition and other health-related education, and healthier food choices, for preschool – middle school aged children. "Our kids didn't do this to themselves. They don't decide the sugar content in soda or the advertising content of a television show.Kids don't choose what's served to them for lunch at school, and shouldn't be deciding what's served to them for dinner at home. And they don't decide whether there's time in the day or room in the budget to learn about healthy eating or to spend time playing outside." -Michelle Obama, Childhood Obesity Summit
