  2. About interoperability • EU Commission through IDABC (Interoperable Delivery of European eGovernment Services to public Administrations, Businesses and Citizens) • The aspects of interoperability identified as being in need of consideration by the European Interoperability Framework v.1.0 (EIF) are: Organizational, Semantic and Technical interoperability (EIF, section 2.1.2) • For buildingSMART this corresponds to IDM, IFD Library and IFC

  3. About interoperability • Beyond the ability of two or more computer systems to exchange information, semantic interoperability is the ability to automatically interpretthe information exchangedmeaningfully and accurately in order to produce useful results as defined by the end users of both systems. • Meaning of language, definitions… • Terms and the relationship between terms …

  4. Interoperability through standards RDL (ISO 15926-4 ) OASIS DEX RDL (ISO 15926-4) Templates/DEX ISO 10303-203, 209, 212, 214, 239, ASD 9300-110 ISO 15926-2 Aeronautics & Space RDL (ISO 15926-4) DEX PLCS (ISO 10303-239), ASD/AIA S1000D, ADL SCORM Defense Oil & Gas IDM (ISO TC59 SC13) IFD Library (ISO 12006-3) IFC (ISO 16739) Process Terminology Built Environment (AEC-BIM) Digital Storage

  5. buildingSMART • IFC – HOW to share data • IFD – WHAT you are sharing • IDM – WHICH data and WHEN to share it • $£¥€–WHY… Before noon…

  6. IFD Library Objectives – semantic interoperability in B&C sector Open, international and multilingual Library based on the principles of ISO 12006-3, 2007 Financially non-profit but self-supporting Operate as a group under buildingSMART International Support implementation of buildingSMART technology in the global building and construction industry through extension of IFC and integration of IFC with IDM Provide for controlled use of content Wide use and adoption

  7. IFD Library IFD Library provides: A generic API and content Multilingual and translation capabilities Unique global reference to any concept – GUID IFC model enrichment and link to product specific data Database of terminology, definitions and relationships A way to structure libraries

  8. IFD Library Description IFD Library will never be important in itself Most users will never directly interact with the IFD Library IFD Library is only relevant if it helps: Reduce cost Increase profit Add extra value Create new business opportunities

  9. IFD Library Group Formalized discussions in Lisbon May 2006 Established IFD Library Partners, November 2006 STABU, Netherlands buildingSMART Norway Project Construction Specifications Canada Construction Specifications Institute, USA Expanding involvement Established as a group in buildingSMART International in May 2007

  10. IFD Library statusBusiness Plan Financials – non profit but self supporting Membership Partner € 5 000/yr Affiliate € 2 000/yr Observer € 1 000/yr Project by project funding Licensed product fee - proposed Embedded license fee – to software developers, other integrators for using IFD Library access in a product End-user fee – not resold embedded in software. Value added services above basic browser access

  11. IFD Library statusBusiness Plan Recommendations Pursue the continued development of the IFD Library Bring in Affiliates and Observers in the Partner countries to start making use of the technology Add Partners to expand the language coverage of IFD Library Continue to develop IFD Library Group as a part of buildingSMART International - integrating IFD Library with IFC and IDM/MVD Seek opportunities to collaborate with other related terminology standard initiatives Operate IFD Library as a self-sustaining enterprise Business plan available for download at www.ifd-library.org

  12. IFD Library GroupHow to get involved • Affiliate • An organization with a IFD Library development project approved by partners (not use of content) • Access to .Net toolkit • How to become an IFD Library Affiliate • Fill out project form (www.ifd-library.org) • EPM Technology, SINTEF Building and Infrastructure (Norway) • SINTEF Building and Infrastructure (Norway) • Not very formal process

  13. IFD Library GroupHow to get involved • IFD Library Group Observer: • Company/organization with interest in IFD Library • Sign up and receive information about development and open sessions • Digicon – Canada • NATSPEC – Australia • BSD - USA • ARCOM – USA • AEC3 – UK • However several more underway • Fill out observer form www.ifd-library.org
