  1. Signalling Interworking for ATM VPWSdraft-bocci-l2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01 Matthew Bocci, Mustapha Aissaoui, David Watkinson (Alcatel)Daniel Proch, John Rutemiller (Marconi)Jeff Sugimoto, Ghassem Koleyni (Nortel)Himanshu Shah (Ciena)Martin Jensen, George Matey (Equipe) draft-bocci-2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01.txt

  2. Background and Relevance • Informational Draft describes tunnelling ATM signalling & routing over VPWS • PNNI is ATM signalling with dynamic routing • AINI is ATM signalling with static routing • ATM PW label distribution using PNNI/AINI • Describes approved ATM Forum specification • “ATM-MPLS Network Interworking Signalling Specification, AF-CS-0197.00” • Make IETF participants aware of mature work in other bodies related to L2 VPN charter • L2VPN charter item 2: Signalling of L2VPN related information for set-up of L2VPN circuits draft-bocci-2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01.txt

  3. Problem Statement • PNNI is being deployed on wide scale in ATM multiservice networks • Widespread deployment of ATM VPWS needs to support interconnect of ATM SVC / S-PVC networks • PNNI deployments are carefully engineered • avoid changing PNNI network design/management/performance when moving to PSN core • PNNI is evolving • avoid changing PSN / PW protocols with each new PNNI feature • Maintain single end-to-end control plane across PNNI / PSN tunnel domains • Add an optional IE to PNNI/AINI to allow it to exchange PW labels and negotiate PW encapsulation mode. draft-bocci-2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01.txt

  4. Architecture PE supports both PNNI and PWE3 ATM SVC/SPVC PW MPLS ATMPNNI ATMPNNI PE PE PSN Tunnel is a single-hop PNNI link PNNI control channels carried on dedicated ATM PWs Routing Control Channel Signalling channel PNNI control PWs established by provisioning or PWE3 control protocol Can use any PWE3 ATM encapsulation PW labels exchanged between PEs in an IE in ATM signalling message draft-bocci-2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01.txt

  5. Features • PSN is transparent to PNNI • No changes needed to current PWE3 / L2VPN protocols • Supports multi-hop or multi-domain ATM PWs • Resiliency: can use one or both of: • PNNI rerouting to protect ATM PWs • PSN mechanisms e.g. MPLS FRR to protect PSN tunnel • ATM QoS: • PSN tunnel looks like a regular ATM link • PEs advertise PSN tunnel QoS/traffic parameters to ATM, as today, for GCAC • ATM<->DiffServ traffic parameter mappings are proposed draft-bocci-2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01.txt

  6. Next Steps • Multiple interoperable implementations demonstrated at Supercom, 2004 • ATM Forum spec was approved last year • draft-bocci is now in its second revision • Fix ID nits • Progress as informational RFC draft-bocci-2vpn-pnni-mpls-iw-01.txt
