  2. Talking about mental health is a sensitive matter for many. The reason is that mental health happens to be among the core human issues. 26% of Americans aged 18 and older “suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year”.

  3. Support workers based in Kentucky exert themselves to tackle this issue, but are they doing it right? We speak of KY because a staggering 43.6% of adults there reported symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  4. The fundamental solution is providing mental health training for support workers in KY. So, here’s a quick training-oriented guide for support workers, helping them understand how they should approach patients with mental health disorders.

  5. Create a safe environment for patients. Such conversations must occur in a private, comfortable setting where patients feel safe and respected.

  6. Use clear and straightforward language. Avoid making the mistake of using medical jargon as it might complicate the tone with the patient.

  7. Listen as much as possible. Listening to patients enables you to show empathy and validate their feelings.

  8. Focus on strengths and abilities. It’s okay to talk about weaknesses. However, patients are more comfortable with conversations centered on what they CAN do instead of what they CANNOT do.

  9. Ask open-ended questions. Encourage patients to share experiences. If they express themselves, they’ll provide better insights.

  10. Reassure! Tell patients it’s perfectly alright to be open, and seeking professional assistance is a positive first step to recovery.

  11. Mental health training for support workers in KY has become inevitable for companies. Considering the rising cases of mental disorders, it’s important to implement essential training programs to make a difference.
