Thanksgiving's History Thanksgiving is a countrywide excursion in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia that is celebrated on specific days around the United States Thanksgiving has a almost four-hundred-year history. The Pilgrims celebrated the "First Thanksgiving" in October 1621, following their first harvest in the New World. The Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Native Americans held an autumn harvest feast, which is regarded one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies today. President George Washington grew to be the first president to declare a Thanksgiving excursion in 1789, when he declared November 26, a Thursday, as a day of country wide thanksgiving for the United States Constitution, at the request of Congress. Thanksgiving is a country wide excursion observed on several dates around the United States.
