The First Solar Telescope A solar telescope is an instrument designed to view the Sun using its infrared heat-sensing components. Solar telescopes generally detect visible light with infrared wavelengths, or not very near at all, the ultraviolet spectrum. The name "solar" comes from the Greek word for "that which heats" (sun). Many people confuse a solar-powered telescope with a "solar greenhouse" because the instruments both use light energy from the Sun to produce information about the planet. Do you want to learn more? Visit SOLAR TELESCOPE. Invented in the late 1800's by German Astronomer Seemann, a solar telescope was the first instrument ever developed to be used in the search for celestial bodies. Although the instrument worked, it was never able to detect all the stars in the sky. It was only efficient to scan through a small part of the sky. The modern day scientific instruments we use today have evolved greatly since that time. There are many new technological developments in the field of astronomy that have resulted in better efficiency, higher resolution, and greater capabilities in viewing solar systems and other terrestrial objects. You can learn more at TELESCOPE CAMERA. One early solar telescope was invented by a French sailor and cartographer, Maupass, who were researching the islands of Hawaii in 1847. According to legend, he made the discovery when he sailed into the "heavens," and found that the reflected images of the Sun appeared identical to a map he had just drawn of the Hawaiian Islands. He claimed that he put together a crude design for a solar-powered instrument and showed it to an influential Swedish doctor. The doctor supposedly told Maupass that he (the doctor) could prove that the Sun truly existed by detecting its gravitational pulls on the Earth, and thus obtained a patent on the device in 1850. Some sources say the doctor actually created the first solar-powered telescope. No matter what the story is, the Solar Telescope Society is on record as being the organization that first used a pellet-type reflector as part of a research program on telescopes.
