  1. Navisworks Clash Detection and Project Analysis By: Tejjy Inc.

  2. Introduction: Clashes in construction are quite a common occurrence and they cost the construction company dearly! Clashes lead to a waste of material and rework which can cost the company 7.25-35% of the overall cost. Besides they lead to delays in the project. Therefore, clash detection at the early stages of a project is vital to avoid unnecessary expenses and delays.

  3. Common Causes for Occurrence of Clashes in Construction: • When components of diverse disciplines sharing common space intersect. • When there is insufficient buffer space around the equipment being used. • Due to conflicts equipment scheduling and project workflow. • Whenever a clash occurs, various stakeholders need to work together to resolve it before the project moves ahead. • Contd…

  4. Common Causes for Occurrence of Clashes in Construction: Clash detection software such as Autodesk Navisworks helps in the coordination in 3D for best design build solutions. Navisworks also identifies and inspects the areas of conflicts and helps address them by generating clash reports. Inspection of model reduces human error. Clash detection can be included as an ongoing audit check at various stages through out construction lifecycle of the project. With the help of this software, clashes can be detected at the design stage itself and corrective action is taken prior to the construction stage.

  5. Types of Clashes in the construction area:

  6. Hard Clash:It occurs when two components of construction sharing the same space intersect.  Rule-based algorithms on the BIM model and semantics facilitate the detection of this type of clash. Soft Clash: Soft clash occurs under two conditions. Either if an element is not provided geometric tolerance or there is a breach of its buffer zone. Soft clashes have the potential to cause maintenance issues and safety risks.  By furnishing Navisworks with relevant data pertaining to the tolerance aspects of a specific element, soft clash and be eliminated. This is because, based on the data, Navisworks can identify the clashes according to relevant regulations and standards. 4D Clashes: These clashes occur due to conflict of inter-disciplinary activities. A single clash in the workflow impacts all activities and can lead to even bringing the entire project to a standstill.

  7. Integration of Clash detection and other Autodesk Navisworks tools: • Clash detection feature with an Object animation tool, detects and resolves clashes between moving objects. • Clash detection with TimeLiner facilitates checks time-based clashes. • When Clash detection is used with TimeLiner and Object animation, it can identify clashes in fully animated TimeLiner schedules. • This is affirmed by the fact that industry-wide each clash detected saves approximately $17000 in a project. • (Source: Association of Construction and Development)

  8. Conclusion: A construction sequence can be created in Navisworks to avoid workflow related clashes with the help of a systematic step by step phasing of activities . The schedule of activities is worked out according to the start times and end times of individual activities defined by Navisworks. Tejjy Inc. leverages Navisworks to detect clashes throughout the lifecycle of the project to enhance productivity and minimize delays and costs.
