  1. Architect Vs. Contractor

  2. Who is an Architect? • A licensed professional, who designs buildings, homes& skyscrapers • Creates designs matching construction needs & building safety requirements • Ensures building plans/blueprint drawings adhering to local building codes

  3. Who is a Contractor? • A Contractor is present on-site while a building is in progress • Works in collaboration with an Architect, following the construction project plans • Ensures project to get constructed, according to architectural drawings with right materials & layouts

  4. Dynamic between Architect & Contractor • Relationship between Architect & Contractor is a symbiotic one—the two complement each other & necessary for the success of an architectural project. • The dynamic between Contractor & Architect is like chemistry between two lead actors - they must be seen on equal footing, in collaboration with one another to reach a goal.

  5. Famous Architect on Importance of Contractor • Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous Architect commented on the importance of his contractor: • “I’d rather hire a crook who knows how to build than an honest man who doesn’t. I can police a crook but I can’t get something out of an honest man who doesn’t have it in him. I can’t turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse.”

  6. Crux of the Matter • Both Architects and Contractors are necessary to create beautiful buildings. • Even Frank Lloyd Wright couldn’t build his own buildings himself—he required a contractor with adequate skill & equitable artistic vision as himself to complete his projects.

  7. Collaboration Improvement reflected on BIM Projects by Architects& GCs • Data collected from Dodge Analytics Report (Percentage of respondents who receive project improvement at a high frequency) • Reduce project error & data friction as per 70% Architects & 49% GCs • Increase client satisfaction with greater project visibility & input as per 56% architects & 42% GCs • Deliver higher quality & creative designs/projects as per 64% architects & 38% GCs
