Distance Between Two Points • The distance between two points in a plane. • A and B are two points, the distance between A and B is the distance between two points.
How to Find the Distance Between 2 Points? • P and Q are two points with co-ordinates (x1, y1) and (x2, y2). • To find the distance, draw a triangle joining the two points. • From the right triangle, the distance can be caluclated.
Rise and Run • The vertical distance of the triangle is the rise (b in diagram) • The horizontal distance is the run ( a in diagram) • The distance between the two points A and B is C (hypotenuse of triangle)
Formula • From the pythagorean theorem, c = square root of (a^2 + b^2). • From the co-ordinate points, the vertical and horizontal distances can be caluclated.
Formula • The horizontal distance is x2 – x1. • The vertical distance is y2 – y1. • Substituting in pythogorean theorem formula, the distance between two points can be calculated.
Formula • Distance = Square root of (a^2 + b^2). • a=(x2-x1)^2 • b=(y2-y1)^2 • Hence distance = Square root [(x2-x1)^2 + (y2 -y1)^2].
Distance Between Two Points Calculation • Consider two points A and B with co-ordinates (2,2) and (6,5). • To find distance between A and B, join the two points forming a traingle. • Find the rise and run. • Substitute the values.
Distance Between Two Points Calculation • Run = 6 – 2 = 4 • Rise = 5 -2 = 3 • Distance = Square root ( 4^2 + 3^2) • Square root (16+9) • Square root (25) • 5 is the distance between A and B.
