  1. ANALYSING MUSIC VIDEOS

  2. Taylor Swift – You need To Calm Down • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dkk9gvTmCXY

  3. The title of the song is on her eye mask, making it more familiar to viewers and reminding them about the song • Taylor swift is in the center up close showing that she is the main character and important for the video. It helps sell her as an artist • Very vibrant colour, clearing going to be pop and upbeat.

  4. Could be a reference to one her songs that is called the man. Intertextual reference from Cher in an interview, shows she is strong and independent. Cher is a gay icon and the song talks about how giving hate doesn’t make anyone less gay.

  5. Cats are seen as quite feminine and stereotyped and crazy cat lady’s if people have them Taylor swift also owns multiple cats which makes her appeal to her audience its also quite a simple watch and not a Rolex making her seem relateable There is a 13 which is not normally on a watch as she finds the number 13 her lucky number.

  6. Things are on fire and burning and she is calm. She’s ignoring the drama that is going on around her. The pink signifies shes elegant and girly

  7. Continuation of the last shot as she is relaxed in a pool whilst the caravan is on fire. Zooms into her showing her significance Bright colours emphasise the pop theme She looks glamorous, fur coat, heels, silky dress, dimond glasses, cocktail. She looks relaxed and glam at the same time. Whilst in the pool Shes alone at the moment with overly green grass and fake plants, looks like a fake community. Emphasises the fake ness of apps like twitter

  8. Rainbows connote gay pride Mailbox says love letters only, album is called Lover Plus size dancer might suggest she is body positive and embraces ranges of body types Upbeat dancing, seems happy. Love letters only suggests that she doesn’t want hate, people that are part of LGBTQ+ get a lot of hate from the internet

  9. Laverne Cox is a transgender actress, male to female, big LGBTQ+ advocate she featured in Orange is the new black. Big icon for LGBTQ+ community A lot of different races with in the video, showing many ethnic minorities with in her vide, trying to be inclusive Links to trans rights, Taylor supports trans rights

  10. The person shooting the arrow into the number 5 is Hailey Kiyoko, who is a lesbian icon and has songs for gay people The number five is significant as the fifth track on each album is always one about a real heartbreak she has expierenced

  11. Pink blue and purple are the colours on the bisexual pride flag at a gay wedding Inclusion of celebrities suggest success and fame and power, popularity Both grooms are wearing blue showing that they match together, also stereotypically a colour associated with men.

  12. Reference to the bible, many people use the bible to go against parts of the LGBTQ+ This shows the hate and bullying she

  13. The man that appears in this part of the video is called Tan France, a member of the show Queer Eye which follows five gay men who help people that are struggling. The show is very popular within the gay community The colours are very vibrant continuing the idea of pop.

  14. In this areal shot, Taylor swift isn’t in the middle but is surrounded by other people, the song isn’t only about her and stopping hate towards her, but other people and especially members of the LGBTQ+ community. They are relaxed and having a nice tea party enjoying themselves, ignoring the hate that other people are trying to give them.

  15. Here Ellen Degeneras is getting a tattoo, she was the first openly gay tv presenter and comedian, seen as an iconic figure for LGBTQ+ rights and movements.

  16. This shot is very colourful and bright, continuing the theme of pop through out the video. Taylor and her friends seem to be un-phased about the crowd in front of them who are giving them hate, matches with the lyric that “shade never made anybody less gay” They are calm whilst other people are worked up and angry at them. There is a spelling error on the sign, showing the people protesting aren’t probably well educated.

  17. Billy Porter is seen walking between the protestors and the people sunbathing. He is known for his iconic over the top looks on the red carpets such as big dresses, controversial as many people still think that men shouldn’t wear typically feminine clothes.

  18. In this shot the sign says “pop queen pageant” whilst there are multiple drag queens dressed as some of the most iconic women in pop at the time the song was made, such as Beyoncé, Cardi B, Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. Drag queens are very important to the LGBTQ+ community as they take away toxic masculinity which is a big problem across the world. Drag queens are controversial for many people as they don’t understand why a man would dress as a woman even if they don’t want to be a woman.

  19. This shot is a close up to the drag queen who is impersonating Taylor swift as she sings the lyric shown in the image. She is trying to say how there is no need to shame a woman for being a woman and who they want to be. The drag queens arms are resting on two other impersonators, this could suggest that even though they are currently competing against each other they still support each other and each other’s choices.

  20. In this clip, Ru Paul is shown to be the judge of the competition, which is iconic as he has a show called Ru Pauls drag race in which 12 people compete to be named Americas next drag queen. However he throws the crown in the air as Taylor says “we all got crowns”, when the crown is thrown up the audience sees all of the people in this part of the video underneath it, emphasising the fact they are all queens and all deserve their own crown.

  21. This clip is iconic to pop culture as Katy Perry and Taylor Swift had a feud for many years and Taylor Swift even wrote the song “Bad Blood” about Katy Perry. This video shows how they have made up and are friends again. Katy. Perry is also wearing the burger outfit that she wore to the Met Gala which received a lot of comments on how controversial it was. Taylor is showing support by wearing a costume with chips showing that they match and go together as burgers and chips are commonly eaten together.

  22. Ryan Reynolds is married to Blake Lively, one of Taylor Swift’s close friends. He is painting based from a photo of the Stonewall Inn, the site of the 1969 police raid that is considered to have kicked off the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. This shows that he supports gay rights and even straight men and women can support the community and the hate that they face.

  23. The hug shows that they have declared peace at last and are friends again. It also shows that even though you may be against someone at one point you can reconcile and put your differences aside after apologises.
