What is a MOT?

An MOT is an annual inspection mandated by law to make sure your vehicle is secure and complies with the minimum standards for road and environmental safety. MOT stands for Ministry of Transportation because it was this department of government that oversaw the test's introduction in 1960.

  1. What is a MOT? The MOT test covers inspections of your vehicle's various systems, including the braking and fuel systems, as well as seat belts, mirrors, wipers, lights, and the exhaust. The engine, clutch, and gearbox conditions are not covered by the MOT. Many vehicles also have their exhaust emissions assessed, as part of their MOT. They won't be given a MOT certificate if it is determined that their emissions are too high. You can always find a MOT history checker online and check MOT history.
