  1. Getting Your Child to Join Basketball Leagues? Read This If you are a parent of a child who loves to play basketball and has learned the basic rules of the game, you might be thinking about how to motivate your child to do better. The answer is to look for basketball leagues for youth in your area. What You Must Know Before Choosing a Basketball League for Your Child Generally, parents think that joining a basketball league can create a lot of pressure on their children. Well, it depends on what kind of league you have chosen for your child. If your child is too young to handle the pressure of wins and losses, it is not a good idea to get your child to play in win-loss leagues. So, the age of your child matters a lot when choosing a basketball league. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t expose your child to a healthy environment and encouragement that a basketball league can provide. So, for kids, instead of win-loss leagues, we recommend you get your child to join basketball leaguesthat emphasize player development, fair team play, and good sportsmanship. During the initial years, kids are sensitive and can get easily de-motivated and feel depressed if the environment of a league is not healthy. Many basketball leagues that focus on whether kids win or lose the games and not on their development can do more harm than good. Kids don’t respond well when they play zones, have unequal playing time, and face a stressful environment where coaches are yelling at the kids and placing pressure on them to win the game. For kids, it doesn’t remain a fun thing to do anymore.

  2. According to a recent study, most children (about 70 - 80 percent) who play organized sports that overemphasize winning quit playing after the age of 15. That’s terrible because this is the developmental phase not only for sports players but also for regular kids physically and mentally. The main reason behind it is that kids respond poorly to stress at a young age. At an early age, kids like to play games that are fun. Placing an emphasis on winning at a delicate age and yelling at them to play better are the reasons why they quit so early. So, if your child is 8+ years old, then find basketball leagues that are specifically designed for kids. Once your child has a solid foundation in making layups, dribbling, passing, shooting, and playing man-to-man defence, then you should focus on finding basketball leagues that are created for youth. When they grow and get more experienced, it becomes important for them to apply their basketball fundamentals and skills in competitive game-like scenarios. In Southern California, your child can easily join a development league or club-level team to learn more and improve his/her playing skills depending on how old your child is and how well he or she plays. Apart from development leagues, Royal Basketball School also hosts weekly basketball leagues for youth in Sherman Oaks. So, if you are looking for a basketball league where your child can enhance his/her skills and competitiveness, feel free to get in touch and enroll your child in weekly leagues and team practices.
