DO I LOOK GREAT OR DO I LOOK GREAT? Body image is your perception of your body and how you feel about it, both physically and mentally. No matter what your body type is, faults come following you like they are part of your shadow. Body image issues have been insidious and creeping their way inside our society for ages. According to a study done in 2018 with adolescent college going girls, it was found that body image dissatisfaction was there among 77.6% of girls. Among men, the issues are rising. Psychiatrists have reported that boys falling under the 14-16 years of age group have encountered eating disorders, the percentage of which goes up to 30-40%. This is a day-to-day struggle. If you are among the people battling no such issues, kudos to you. Then this article would be to humbly remind you to include kindness in your speech.
Where does all of this stem from? For years we have all been sitting in front of the big flat screen admiring the snazzy couple who fight against society to be with each other. It all seems ironic now when you see that underneath all they are ultimately trying to evince to the public what society likes to be shown. Which is exactly opposite to reality. And I sincerely sympathize with our fellow actors who have been thumped into the ground with the expectations put on them by our society. It’s a vicious cycle!
So, what should we do? There is no magic spell that would change your outlook at once. But here are some ways that will kick start your journey: When you look at yourself in the mirror, look at the ‘whole of you,’ and not just the ‘skinny you,’ or ‘your thighs.’ If you can cry while watching Will Smith clap for himself in the movie ‘Pursuit of Happyness,’ then you can surely applaud yourself for being your wonderful self. List the things you like about your body and appreciate it daily. Condemn and shield yourself from any negative scuttlebutt you may hear, be it from people, family members, or society in general. The ‘you’ is not just built from your physical appearance. Studies have shown that physical exercise works wonders when it’s done for internal reasons rather than working only to improve appearance. Award yourself and do something that makes you feel good daily.
