These images show her on an inspection table like shes being put under the spotlight of the audience.The patient tag could be a symbol of her being put under control and marked as just a patient. This is a close up of the patient tag and I think the table being made of steel is a purposeful choice and it symbolizes strength which could correlate to this star persona These screenshots from the opening of the music video have similar blue undertones which are calming. The quick tracking shot of the water may symbolize power and wisdom which could relate to how Calvin Harris wants to be portrayed. The extreme close up of the girls lips has sexual connotations and the half light creates mystery.

  3. The red neon lighting is effective because it gives a club feel and eludes to the following scenes when she enters the club. The overlapping effect on this close up connotes the feeling of being drunk which relates to this party vibe. The close up clearly captures the facial expression on this females face. The green lighting and shallow focus makes the girl stand out from the dark background and suggests she is getting closer to the party lights. The wide shot of the girl in low key lighting is mysterious and suggests she is timid. The plain white vest symbolises innocence and suggests the girl isn’t used to the party scene.

  4. This high angle on the crowd clearly portrays there are lots of people and creates a more vibrant scene, again with the neon lights. The editing here is fast paced and this shot has a quick pan so that the viewer can see all the people. The silhouette of the girl standing infront of the neon lights may symbolise that this is unknown territory for her. The wide shots allows the audience to see her and the party behind clearly. The mid shot of the pole dancer and the man in shallow focus in the corner relates to Laura Mulvey’s theory that woman are seen through the ‘male gaze’. The harsh pink lighting reinforces the club scene and the pink colour on a female, conventionally has sexual connatations.

  5. The set changes here to the water where the party continues but on a boat. In this close up, she has no make up and beachy blonde hair. The performer is Gigi Hadid, which may bring an existing audience who know her from being a professional model. I think the artist is trying to target a younger audience, teenages to young adults as they will be the people who know Gigi. In this section of the music video, the fast-paced editing of the mid shots of the people on the boat clearly show the relationships and emotions. They portray wealthy characters who are enjoying the high life. Perhaps, this is how Calvin’s star persona is being portrayed. Throughout, the fast-paced editing relates to Goodwin’s theory that the music and visuals link. This high angle, establishing shot shows the audience they’re on a yacht and jetski’s circling it. This suggests they are rich and a sense of luxury. Also the yacht could connote the journey the girl is going through in this party life.

  6. This set is at the pool. The recurring theme of water symbolises wisdom and water is a symbol of music which relates perfectly to the music video which has continuously scenes of clubbing. This clip is filmed in slo motion which makes the moment of the girl clearer and emphasize her importance. The close up shows her red lipstick which accentuates her lips and grabs the attention of people who may find her attractive. The white light gives the effect of the sun beaming through the leaves and gives a whimsical softness to the shot. This mid shot of the girl has sexual connotations due to her facial expressions and revealing dress that shows whats underneath. The next shot cuts to a close up of a male which again, relates to Mulvey’s male gaze theory. The main performer is in shallow focus with the other girls in the background in high heels and swimsuits which suggests luxury.

  7. The mid shot shows the girl dancing infront of the bright sparks and shows her confidence which contrasts to the start of the video where she was timid. Finally, a wide shot shows the party outside with colourful lights in the background contrasting with dimly lit crowd. The two clips here shot reverse shot quickly and reiterate the fun energy throughout the video. Using Richard Dyers star theory, Calvin Harris is being portrayed as a club, upbeat artist who is bold and likes to stand out.
