Tips on How to Build High-Quality Resins Miniatures High-quality resin is a very versatile material that has quite some advantages compared to plastic or metal. Here at Ravenous Miniatures, we are committed to creating the finest high-quality resin miniatures and cyberpunk miniatures. Neither does this material shrink under pressure like metals nor is it deprived of detail as many convectionalhard plastics. As major manufacturers specialize in ready-to-run models, the world of model kits has gained popularity over time. Resin is a plastic-like substance that starts as two different chemicals which are combined then solidified. When in a liquid state, the resin can be poured into a silicone moldto form a part.
If you are used to working with metal or plastic miniatures, then working with high-quality resin miniatures can be tricky at first. Here are some tips to build resin miniatures. • Choose your Tools and Material Start by getting everything you will need for building the resin miniature ready. Some of the things you will need include a hobby knife, sandpaper in different grits, Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue, Krazy Glue), putty, an old toothbrush, sandable spray primer, jeweler’s saws, and files. Planning will keep you from stopping the process to get the missing part later. But these tools and materialsmay differ because not all kits are created equally. • Cleaning A common issue with resin kits is flash or thin excess materials around the edges of parts. To clean the parts, carefully brush them with an old toothbrush and warm water containing dishwashing solutions. Take particular care with the fragile parts to avoid breaking them. After washing makes sure you rinse the parts afterward and allow them to thoroughly air-dry. • Fixing Warped Parts and Surface Due to unavoidable circumstances, it is impossible not to get a warped part. And the best part is the bent parts can be straightened without any damage. To straighten the parts, clamp them securely to a flat surface and then use a heat gun to gradually warm the piece. Make sure you heat slowly and evenly because too much heat may end up melting the parts. If you don’t have a heat gun, you can use hot water. The surface of some resin pieces may need some smoothing or sanding in the odd place. To smoothen the roughparts, simplyuse fine-grit sandpaper on any imperfect surfaces.
• Gluing To glue the resin parts you can use superglue, but most experts prefer using cyanoacrylate (CA) to assemble the parts. CA is readily available and will bond resin to resin and resin to metal. For the most part, it is advisable to apply the CA using a small micro-brush because when it gets into contact with your skin it instantly bonds.Pour a drop of CA on a scrap of plastic and transfer as needed to the resin kit. • Painting Even though some resin miniatures kits come pre-painted, some are not painted. Painting is usually don’t after the basic assemblyof the kit is complete but before adding all the small details
