  1. Cataracts Cataracts are a painless clouding of the internal lens of the eye.Cataracts make it difficult to see clearly and can also cause blindness over time because they prevent light from passing through the lens. Cataracts worsen over time because they are progressive. The majority of cases are seen in older people, but they can also be seen in younger people. Pic credits – About Kids Health What Are the Causes of Cataracts? It is not entirely clear why people develop cataracts. Aging is a well-documented risk factor. Other factors that could contribute to the development of cataracts include: •Excessive alcohol consumption •Diabetes •Prolonged exposure to radiation or the sun •Smoking •Corticosteroid usage for an extended period Symptoms of Cataracts Common symptoms of cataracts include: •trouble seeing at night •seeing colors as faded •increased sensitivity to glare •blurry vision •halos surrounding lights •double vision in the affected eye •a requirement for prescription glasses to be changed on a regular basis

  2. Prevention of Cataracts While no single move or solution has been proven to prevent cataracts, a variety of lifestyle changes can help to prevent or delay their progression. Measures that could be useful include the following: •Wear ultraviolet (UV)-blocking sunglasses or glasses. •If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you can take care of it. •If you smoke, you can stop. •Using only small quantities of alcohol. •Maintain a good diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Most of these acts have the added benefit of conferring cardiovascular benefits in addition to good eye health. Taking dietary supplements has not been proven to protect against cataracts, and certain antioxidant supplements have also been shown to be harmful. Pic Credits – American Optometric Association Treatment for cataract •When cataracts prohibit you from doing your everyday activities, such as reading or driving, surgery is recommended. It is sometimes used when cataracts obstruct the treatment of other eye conditions. •The use of ultrasound waves to split the lens apart and remove the fragments is one surgical technique known as phacoemulsification. •The cloudy part of the lens is removed through a long incision in the cornea during extracapsular surgery. Following surgery, an artificial intraocular lens is implanted in the place where the natural lens was removed. •Cataract removal surgery is usually very safe and has a high success rate. Infection, bleeding, and retinal detachment are some of the risks of cataract surgery, but the incidences of any of these complications are less than 1%.The majority of patients are able to go home the same day as their surgery.
