  1. How to remove and replace your chipper blades before they become seriously dull? You'll need to remove the old chipper blades from the rotor assembly whether you're sharpening them or replacing new ones bought from a chipper blade supply & service. Keep in mind that the steps outlined below are only suggestions. Before you begin, it's usually a good idea to study your chipper's product handbook for precise instructions. These procedures are also designed for chippers at the consumer or prosumer level. Commercial- grade chippers are larger machines with additional features that may or may not correspond to the information in this guide. But don't be put off by the prospect of working with large equipment. Changing the blades on your consumer or prosumer chipper is as simple as a few basic steps, even though we advocate working with a partner. Tools you need: Personal protective equipment (PPE) list (PPE) protective eyewear and gloves Impact driver Wrench/socket wrench Torque wrench Sharpening tools if necessary (sander, grinder, whetstone, file) 1. Remove the Hopper from the Top Remove the hopper that feeds leaves into the shredder if your machine is a chipper shredder by releasing the nuts that keep it in place. You'll be able to get to the old chipper blades this way. 2. Discard the Housing The housing is the metal case that protects the rotor assembly and blades. You can notice in our photo that we used a 13 mm socket wrench to loosen the nuts around the housing's perimeter. Lift the housing carefully and lay it aside to gain access to the chipper's rotor component. 3. Prioritize safety Don't put your life in jeopardy! Disconnect the spark plug in your gas chipper or unplug the power cord on your electric chipper. If you don't, you run the chance of the chipper's motor starting up while you're working. Hence, when you would call a chipper blade supply & service to change the blade, they will also disconnect the power first. 4. Loosen the Blade-Securing Bolts Chipper blades are frequently connected to the rotor assembly by bolts that may be released using a hex key or Allen wrench. Your bolts may be tight or difficult to spin, or they may be secured in place by a thread locker. In that situation, you can experiment with your tools to see what you can come up with. However, using a driver like the Milwaukee driver and an appropriately sized bit is a more efficient approach to produce the torque you require. A breaker bar would also work, but it would take longer.

  2. 5. Take away the blade Your chipper blade still has a cutting edge that can slice through the skin, even if it has to be sharpened or replaced. Wear proper safety gloves and grasp the blade by the sides to catch it when removing the fasteners. What are the steps for replacing chipper blades? Even if honing chipper blades saves money, your blades will ultimately develop too many dents and dull places to be sharpened to a clean, sharp edge. Replacing old blades with new ones, bought from a chipper blade supply & service is as simple as removing them in reverse, but here are a few pointers to help you get the most out of them when you're putting them on: For balanced, even chipping, replace all of your blades or knives at once or in pairs whenever possible. If your chipper has an outer and inner pair of blades and you only have one new set of replacement blades, put the new sharper blades on the outside of the rotor assembly and the used blades in good condition on the interior. Remove any debris wrapped around the shaft of the drum or rotor, or packed into the housing surrounding the drum, before installing new blades (note: no blades should be in the machine while you're removing debris). Alternative & Better Solution Changing your machine’s blade is not a simple task, you need expertise, experience and special caution before you move ahead.
