  1. Data Sources Data Modelling Dashboards Power BI Core Concepts https://www.bensound.com/ (energy) https://www.bensound.com/

  2. From Data Sources to Dashboards • Power BI – A BI platform that enables organisations to transform raw data into actionable insights. • Power BI in a Nutshell • Data Sources → where information originates • Data Modelling → how data is structured and prepared • Dashboards → how insights are presented

  3. From Data Sources to Dashboards To master Power BI, know the pillars — and the tools behind them. Let’s explore each core concept in detail.

  4. Power BI Desktop • Data Sources:Connect to hundreds of sources (Excel, CSV, SQL, Odata feeds, etc) . Clean, shape, and load with Power Query. • Table View → Displays data already loaded into Power BI • Data Modelling: Define relationships, create calculated columns, and build DAX measures for consistent reporting • Model View → Create relationships & connect tables logically

  5. Power BI Desktop • Dashboards/Reports: Design interactive visuals, slicers, and filters in Desktop • Report View → See your report in action • Example: • Finance teams connect Xero, model revenue & expenses in DAX, build P&L visuals

  6. Power BI Service • The cloud hub for sharing and managing reports & dashboards. • Data Sources: Scheduled refresh & live connection keeps data current • Dashboards: Pin visuals from multiple reports into KPI views • Example: • Power BI Service → Live Xero P&L dashboards for finance teams & executives

  7. Power BI Mobile Power BI Mobile Apps (iOS and Android) – Dashboards & reports on the go Dashboards: Mobile‑optimised → Touch dashboards with drill‑downs & alerts Example: Finance teams check refreshed P&L/expenses on mobile before meetings

  8. Power BI Mobile Presentation Tool: Accessible insights on the go

  9. Dataset Datasets are the foundation of reporting in Power BI. Data Sources: Import or DirectQuery for real‑time access. E.g. Xero → raw accounting data (invoices, journals, chart of accounts) Data Modelling: Structure tables, relationships & measures for clear analysis E.g. Relationships between Accounts & Transactions, with DAX measures for P&L Dashboards: Every visual runs on datasets

  10. Report Reports are multi-page canvases built on datasets. Data Modelling: Measures & relationships in the semantic model drive visuals Dashboards: Reports provide visuals that can be pinned & consolidated (building blocks of dashboards) Example: Finance reports combine P&L, expenses & costs to deliver clear profitability insights

  11. Dashboard • Dashboards: One page → Unified visuals & KPIs across reports and datasets • Example: • Finance director’s dashboard → Revenue, expenses & cost ratios for quick profitability tracking

  12. Workspace Workspaces are folders in the cloud that organise related content Data Sources & Modelling: Workspaces centralize datasets and dataflows for consistent reporting Dashboards: They host reports and dashboards, enabling seamless collaboration Example: Workspaces named Finance, Marketing, and Sales each hold their own datasets, reports, and dashboards

  13. Dataflow • Reusable Data Pipelines • Dataflows are cloud-based ETL pipelines built with Power Query Online. • Data Sources: They pull raw data into Azure Data Lake. • Data Modelling:Reusable dataflow transformations → Consistent modelling across datasets Example: A company could clean data once, reuse everywhere, e.g. Customer addresses consistent across teams

  14. Semantic Model The semantic model defines how data is understood and queried. Data Modelling: It includes tables, relationships, measures, and metadata Defined once, reused everywhere → Measures in the semantic model Example: Gross Margin %” defined once → Reused across reports via the semantic model

  15. Gateway Gateways connect on-premises data sources to the Power BI Service. Data Sources: They enable secure refreshes and live queries from local databases. Example: A hospital uses an enterprise gateway to refresh patient data from its local SQL Server into Power BI dashboards securely. Gateway

  16. From Raw Data → Actionable Intelligence • Data Sources: Dataflows, Gateways, Service connections bring data in • Data Modelling: Desktop, Datasets, Semantic Models shape and structure it • Dashboards: Reports, Dashboards, Mobile, Service deliver insights • Mastering Power BI’s core pillars unlocks a seamless pipeline from raw data to insight.
