Ahh, what a beautiful word, isn’t it? A tiny heartbeat, a growing bump, a mix of joy and worry all wrapped together in the most magical nine months of your life. At Sikund Diagnostic Centre, we meet so many moms-to-be every day. Some walk in excited, clutching their ?rst ultrasound reports. Others, a little nervous, saying, “Umm, doctor, do I really need all these tests?” And yes, that’s a very valid question. Because there are so many types of pregnancy tests: routine blood tests, ultrasounds, hormonal checks, and now even advanced genetic screenings. It is easy to feel somewhat overwhelmed. So let us slow down, breathe deeply, and use simple language when we talk about this, as we would if you were sitting in our consultation room, sipping water, and you asked us, “Doctor, what is the difference between routine tests and genetic testing in pregnancy?” Table of Content: Your Full Name Routine Pregnancy Tests: Foundation of Any Healthy Your Contact Number Pregnancy Advanced Genetic Testing: Going Deeper into DNA Types of Advanced Genetic Tests Your Email Address Routine Tests vs. Genetic Tests: The Key Difference So, Do You Need Both? Submit How Sikund Diagnostic Centre Supports You A Final Note of Reassurance Routine Pregnancy Tests: Foundation of Any Healthy Pregnancy Let’s start with routine pregnancy tests, which are the tests that every woman expecting a baby should have regardless of her age, personal medical history or background. Think of routine pregnancy tests as your basic health check points as you go through this journey. They’re done to monitor both the mother’s health and the baby’s development, and yes, they’re absolutely essential. Blood Tests and Screening Panels As soon as your pregnancy is con?rmed, your provider will start to order a number of standard blood tests. This may include: CBC (Complete Blood Count) – To screen and assess hemoglobin and overall blood health. Blood Group and Rh Typing – To check compatibility between your blood type and your baby’s blood type. Thyroid Test (T3, T4, TSH) – Since thyroid imbalance can impact fetal growth. Sugar Test (Glucose Tolerance Test) – To screen for gestational diabetes. Liver and Kidney Function Tests – To rule out any functional limitations of these organs. Infection Screenings – For diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis. hmm, yes, that sounds like a lot, but they’re mostly simple, one-time or periodic checks to make sure your body is adapting well. 2. Testing the Urine A basic thousand-test may seem simplistic, however, it can indicate much of the well-being of yourself and your growing baby. This can range from early markers of infection to gestational diabetes or preeclampsia. 3. Ultrasounds Uh-oh the part that every mama loves! Those cute little moments of glancing at your baby on the screen. The routine ultrasounds included are: Early Pregnancy Scan (6-8 weeks) – con?rming heartbeats and due date NT Scan (11-14 weeks) – screening for chromosomal abnormalities and measuring nuchal translucency  Anomaly Scan (18-22 weeks) – the big anomaly scan where all the baby’s organs,  heart, spine, and limbs are evaluated Routine Growth and Doppler Scans (after 28 weeks) – looking for adequate growth, adequate blood ?ow, and adequate placenta. 4. Marker Tests (Dual, Triple or Quad Marker Tests) These markers tests are slightly more advanced but still part of routine pregnancy care. Age, hormones, and genetic abnormalities (such as Down syndrome) can be diagnosed through the analysis of moms blood. Routine tests are like regular checkpoints on your pregnancy road trip, simple, essential, and meant to make sure you and your baby are safe at every turn. While advanced genetic testing isn’t necessary for all pregnancies, it is a valuable resource for a small subset of mothers.  Genetic testing provides information beyond what an ultrasound or routine blood work are able to tell. Genetic tests analyze the DNA of your baby, which is a genetic code that determines everything from hair color to risk of inherited disorders.  These tests help doctors identify possible chromosomal abnormalities early, and occasionally before any signs are seen.  When we use the term “advanced,” it doesn’t imply fancy or something you can choose not to have, it implies the ability to analyze data and provide insight when there is even the slightest reason for concern. Types of Advanced Genetic Tests 1. Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) This sounds complicated, but in reality it is as straightforward as can be. NIPT is a blood test for the mother, usually provided after 10 weeks. It analyzes small pieces of the baby’s DNA, called circulating cell-free DNA or ccffDNA, that are present in your blood.  This test analyzes chromosomal conditions such as: Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18) Patau Syndrome (Trisomy 13) And other chromosomal abnormalities  It is non-invasive because of there being no needles or procedures that will go into the baby’s body, just a small blood sample from the mother. It is safe, and painless, and has a high degree of accuracy.  NIPT – is advisable for moms over the age of 35, moms with previous offspring diagnosis of genetic conditions, and moms if the results of previous marker tests were inconclusive. 2. CVS - Chorionic Villus Sampling Amniocentesis is done a little later, around 15 – 20 weeks. A sample of amniotic (surrounding the baby) will be collected for testing. The amniotic testing is similar to trick / CVS but again the doctor will go over the small risk that is involved with this needle test.  All of these tests at Sikund Diagnostic Centre are performed with best practices and until the process is complete you will be under the guidance of expert radiologists and gynecologist, which might seem scary, but nothing can be done without a full focus on every detail with care. 3. Amniocentesis This test is a little more invasive. At approximately 11 to 14 weeks a small amount of placental tissue will be sampled using a long needle. CVS will provide an in depth analysis of the genetics of the baby, but because it is a needle test, it is only performed in necessary situations, usually due to a higher risk of chromosomal conditions noted in previous tests.  Make a Call Quick Enquiry Chat With Us Give Us a Call Get in Touch Tap To WhatsApp Routine Tests vs. Genetic Tests: The Key Difference Let’s quickly summarize what sets them apart. FEATURE ROUTINE PREGNANCY TESTS ADVANCED GENETIC TESTING Monitors mother’s and baby’s overall health Purpose Detects chromosomal or genetic abnormalities Timing Throughout pregnancy Usually after 10 weeks Some are non-invasive (NIPT), others minimally invasive (CVS, Amniocentesis) Invasiveness Non-invasive (blood, urine, ultrasound) Who Needs It Every expecting mother Only those at higher risk or on doctor’s advice Examples CBC, LFT, GTT, NT Scan, Anomaly Scan NIPT, CVS, Amniocentesis Goal Ensure smooth pregnancy Detect potential genetic disorders early So, Do You Need Both? That’s a good question. The answer depends on your health, age, and family history. Most expectant mothers do just ?ne with routine testing alone. If your doctor sees something unusual in the reports or if you fall into a higher-risk category, they may recommend genetic testing for peace of mind. Sometimes, a mother worries, “Oh, I see, genetic testing sounds daunting. Is this dangerous for my baby?” Not in the least. Non-invasive tests like NIPT involve no risk. Invasive tests like CVS or amniocentesis are only performed when absolutely necessary and a strict protocol is followed to ensure safety.
