Rupin Pass Trek Safety: Tips for a Successful High- Altitude Adventure 15, 250 ft from the sea level, the Rupin Pass is a high-altitude trek hidden in the remote Himalayas providing the trekkers with an unforgettable experience. The remoteness of the location adds to the beauty but also comes with its challenge. It is important for the seasoned trekker as well as a well prepared first timer to keep in mind these points when trekking to the Rupin Pass. •AMS and Acclimatize Over the altitude of 3000 meters the risk of getting altitude sickness increases (AMS). The symptoms of altitude sickness include headache, nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath. To avoid this you must acclimatize, meaning you should give your body time to get used to the altitude and climb up gradually, take rest before climbing up to the next campsite. To prevent altitude-sickness one must also stay away from alcohol consumption, smoking and drinking excess caffeine. You should also keep yourself hydrated and drink around 3 to 4 liters of water daily and take a good diet that must include plenty of carbs.

  2. •Pack The Right Gear You must carry the right gear so that your trip is comfortable and safe. Here are some equipment that would make the trip easy: •Good Trekking Shoes: Waterproof, high ankled and strong gripped. •Rain Gear: Raincoats and Rain covers •Head lamps and Power Bank: For night •Medical Kit: Painkillers, bandages and blister care.Moisture-wicking base layer •Insulating fleece/down mid-layer •Warm gloves, woolen cap, neck gaiter •UV sunglasses and sunscreen •Trekking shoes with ankle support and good grip •Carry A Personal Medical Kit Even if your group has a first aid box, always carry personal essentials. A personal medical kit will help you if you notice any symptoms of altitude sickness. Essentials to Pack: •Paracetamol, Ibuprofen •Diamox (consult your doctor) •Antacids, anti-nausea meds, ORS packets •Band-aids, antiseptic, blister tape •Altitude sickness info card + personal prescription meds

  3. •Train In Advance for the Trek The Rupin Pass Trek is not extremely technical but being physically prepared in advance will definitely help you. The comfort of being able to endure the elevation adds to the experience for the better. You should start at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance and adds the following to your physical training: •Cardio (running, brisk walking, stair climbing) •Leg Workouts (squats, lunges, step-ups) •Core workouts (planks, mountain climbers) •Practice day hikes with a backpack If you are able to jog for 5 KM under 35 minutes and climb 20 floors without breaking a sweat, you should consider yourself prepared. •Follow the Guide Do not go off route during the trek, the himalayas are remote and dangerous it might be difficult to find your way back once you get lost. It is important that you trust and follow your trek guide. •Be Careful on Snow and River Crossings Several parts of the Rupin Pass involve Snow and river crossings. You must remember: •Snow crossings are weak during the noon and it is much safer to cross them during early morning. •River crossings should not be underestimated. River water is always deeper than it looks, follow the guide and pay heed to his instructions. •Avoid crossing rivers or the snow alone.
