What is needed to succeed at GCSE?

  • a personal aspirational target for each subject
  • at least 10 hours homework per week
  • be self motivated and well organised
  • Make a positive contribution to school life
  • to have a good work/life balance

Regular review and learning of work

  • Use a variety of learning styles and techniques
  • Do not just read notes
  • Mnemonics, mind maps, etc
  • Summarising e.g. index cards
  • Imaginative with personal challenges
  • Practice questions-this is key to many subjects. Attending lessons is NOT ENOUGH.

  • 2010 GCSE Results:
  • 83% of our students achieved at least 5 A*-C grades (71% in 2009, 66% in 2008)
  • This places us well in to the top 25% of schools nationally
  • 67% of our students achieved at least 5 A*-C grades, including English and Mathematics (66% in 2009, 50% in 2008)
  • Again, in the top 25% of schools nationally

  • Significant number of students attaining straight A* and A grades in all their subjects
  • We began our policy of inviting parents in to school at the start of Year 10 in September 2008 i.e. the cohort of students who achieved their GCSEs in 2009
  • Since then results have steadily improved
  • Many other factors have helped: use of data, targeted support, personal mentoring, focus on Assessment for Learning
