  1. Vijayadashami is also known as Dasahara, Dusshera, Dasara or Dussehra. It is a major Hindu festival celebrated all over India and Indian subcontinent at the end of Navratri. On this day Lord Ram killed Ravana and His wife Sita who was kidnapped by Ravana came back to Lord Ram. This day is celebrated as God Rama's victory over the Ravana, which is victory of righteous (Dharma) over the evil (Adharma). It is believed that the celebration of Dussehra started in the 17th century, when the king of Mysore ordered the celebration of the day on a grand scale. Ever since, the day is celebrated with great fervor, enthusiasm and energy. There are a lot of mythological tales associated with the day. In the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remembering goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to help restore dharma. In the northern and western regions, it marks the end of "Ramlila". Vijayadashami celebrations include worship of vehicles in the northern and southern part of the India. Elsewhere, on Dasara, the towering effigies of Ravana symbolizing the evil are burnt with fireworks marking evil's destruction. The festival also marks the preparation for one of the most important and widely celebrated Hindu festival, Diwali or Deepavali, the festival of lights, which is celebrated twenty days after the Vijayadashami which marks the return of Lord Rama, wife Sita and brother Laxmana to Ayodhaya.
