  1. US Department of Education (ED) Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program Investing in Learning Games

  2. R&D + Private Marketplace Commercialization SBIR Pilot Testing in Classrooms

  3. Since 2012, half of all ED/IES SBIR awards have been for the R&D of of learning games.

  4. Millions of students in tens of thousands of schools have used SBIR-supported learning games.

  5. Some Recent TRENDS •Genres: puzzles, roleplaying adventure, strategy, story-based, simulations, sandbox virtual environments •Innovations: intelligent tutors, VR, AR, wearables, 3D printing, speech recognition •Accommodations: for students at risk for disabilities •Personalized, differentiated, and scaffolded learning, with embedded formative and summative assessments, real-time results & feedback •Multi-player collaborative learning opportunities •Teacher dashboards to guide instruction

  7. A puzzle and strategy game where students “do photosynthesis” by growing a seed to full plant Reach for the Sun by Filament Games

  8. Happy Atoms uses reverse AR wherein students build models and an app provides feedback (and more challenges) in real-time Happy Atoms by Schell Games

  9. VR chemistry lab provides 360 experiences, feedback and support SuperChemVR by Schell Games

  10. An adventure and role-playing game where students take on roles and make decisions to navigate historical events in the U.S. Up from the Dust by Electric Funstuff

  11. A multiplayer sand box virtual word environment where a class collaboratively builds a virtual civilization Eco by Strange Loop Games

  12. A puzzle that assesses, adapts to the skill level of individual students, and scaffolds learning to mastery Wuzzit Trouble by Brainquake

  13. A role playing social skills game to identify students who may be more likely to bully or to be bullied. Zoo U by 3C Institute

  14. 2018 FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES •2018 IES Research Grant applications are due August 17 •2018 SBIR RFP likely released in late 2017 with proposals due in early 2018.
