His first assignment as a regular captain was touring the West Indies, where his biggest achievement was a single ODI win. Dev entered the World Cup with the usual personal best - 32 games, 608 races (21 on average), 34 wickets. India's only victory in two previous World Championships was over East Africa in 1975. At Yashpal Sharma (89 races), Roger Binnie and Ravi Shastri (3 wickets each), India inflicted the first-ever defeat of the West Indies at the World Cup. ... [25] After defeating Zimbabwe, India lost the following two matches - Australia (despite having a Dev's best career record of 5/43) [26] and the West Indies. India now needed victories over Australia and Zimbabwe to advance to the semi-finals. India collided with Zimbabwe at Neville Ground, Royal Tunbridge Wells on June 18, 1983. After falling behind Dev, fending off lower tier batsmen, stabilized the side with the help of Roger Binney (22 runs) and Madan Lal. Dev scored his centenary with 100 goals. With Kirmani (22 runs) Dev had an undefeated 126 runs on the 9th wicket - a world record that was not broken in 27 years (10,000 days), [27] and finished 175 without knocking out 138 goals, an opportunity which included 16 borders and 6 sixes. The West Indies limited India to 183 runs, and only Krishnamachari Srikkant (38 runs) provided some relief on the score.Despite the loss of Gordon Greenidge, the West Indies stabilized their chances to 57/2 on the back of a quick goal by Viv Richards. Richards made too many aggressive shots when he parried Madan Lal's ski kick, which Dev caught in a deep square foot after running back more than 20 yards. The catch is considered a turning point in the 1983 World Cup Finals and is considered one of the best in the ODI Cricket.
