  1. November 10, 2017 Book a Sailboat Charter to Take You to the Best Whale Watching Spots around the San Juan Islands The San Juan Islands are renowned for being some of the best places to observe the majestic whales in their natural habitat. While the waters are always teeming with aquatic life, if you randomly go island-hopping there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a glimpse of the famed orca whales. There are 172 named islands and reefs in the San Juan County as well as some hidden coves. So, if you don’t want to get lost, make sure you have an experienced crew to guide you. 1 | P a g e

  2. If this is your first time visiting the archipelago, you will want to visit the most famous whale watching spots first. It is true, there are speedboats that will take you there. But, since you've come all the way to the San Juan Islands, why not make a full-day's adventure out of it. Book a sailboat charter and head to these destinations for a wonderful trip that includes a lifetime of memories. Friday Harbor As the major commercial center of the San Juans Islands, Friday Harbor is usually the cast off point for most cruises. The waters surrounding Friday Harbor are home to not only orca whales, but minke, humpback and gray as well. These species like to swim about the Salish Sea during the winter months, especially from October to November. The Friday Harbor waterfront and bay is also a popular hangout for other ocean life as well. Don’t be surprised if you see seals, porpoises, sea lions or otters swimming right alongside your vessel as you venture forth. You might even catch sight of seabirds in flight overhead, including the bald eagle. Kayaking within the marina is also very popular. Orcas Island Most tourists think that the island was named for frequent orca sightings, but that’s just a happy coincidence. In truth, the island’s name is the shorthand version of Horcasitas, the name given to it by Spanish explorers who arrived on its shores in 1791. Later in 1847, mapmaker Henry Kellet assigned the name Orcas Island during his reorganization of the British Admiralty charts. Even so, Orcas Island remains a must-see for wildlife and boating enthusiasts. Orca whales can be seen around the island as well as some other sea creatures. You can indulge in activities like swimming, boat paddling, kayaking, and sailing to get the full Orcas Island experience. Further inland, you can explore the entirety of its 57 square miles by going on hikes, riding bicycles or driving on the hilly terrain. 2 | P a g e

  3. Lopez Island Lopez Island has a small commercial hub and fishing town that offers plenty of activities from dining to kayaking. With stunning views, this so-called “Friendly Isle” is also a favorite whale watching destination. You can make port and enjoy its 63 miles of shoreline as you look to the sea in search of whales and other creatures. The Friendly Isle offers a more relaxed and quiet experience for those of you who like to avoid summer crowds. The island boasts of several quiet bays and driftwood-strewn beaches where you can just enjoy watching the waves break on the shore. Cap off the adventure by telling stories and cooking by the campfire. Sailing around the San Juan Islands presents the perfect opportunity to learn about the sea and the creatures living beneath the water. On a whale watching cruise, a naturalist will be on board to tell you more about the wildlife and the rich history of the archipelago. About Schooners North: Schooners North is a sailboat charter company that offers sail cruises, event charters and private charters. Our 80-foot schooner, the Spike Africa, sails from Friday Harbor to other key destinations on the archipelago. Being a "tall ship" you'll earn not only about the local wildlife, but life on the sea with help from our knowledgeable and friendly crew.
