  2. If you want a real taste of the laid back island life, you need to venture out to uncharted waters by booking multiple day boat charters. There are a few notable hidden coves and secret beaches to discover all over the San Juans. If you’re sorely in need of a little R&R, keep a weather eye on the horizon for these. Grandma’s Cove Travel far enough south of the San Juan Island, and you’ll reach Cattle Point. The southern tip of the island is home to two of the finest beaches around, the Cattle Point Lighthouse, as well as a diverse wildlife population both on sea and land. But for travelers looking for a tranquil retreat, Grandmother’s Cove just off of Cattle Point Road is the place to go. Inside this beautiful secluded cove, the water is shallow and relatively warm especially during the summer, perfect for a nice afternoon swim. It’s also an ideal place to have a picnic if you packed a few snacks with you. Just be sure to clean up as you go. Judd Cove Judd Cove is an exquisite jewel found on the western shore of East Sound. This 11-acre natural area is made up of 355 feet of marine shoreline, mature mixed forests, freshwater wetlands and extensive tidelands. Judd Cove is not just a sanctuary for the wildlife, but for locals and tourists as well. The history buff in you might also be interested to know that this preserve has ties to the lime industry in the San Juans. There’s a partially restored 1880’s lime klin and quarry on the site tells that tells its story. Dead Man’s Cove Despite its rather off-putting name and particularly colorful past, Dead Man’s Cove is a peaceful haven for wanderers at heart. Here, you will find a pebble stone beach, tide pools, forested hillsides and many places to get your much deserved rest. All that, of course, is within view of the deep, blue waters where you might spot orca whales passing through from time to time. Remember to put on some hiking shoes with good traction before you venture up from the 2 | P a g e
