  1. what is an Approach? It is a way dealing with something, or way of dealing or thinking about something.

  2. CURRICULAM APPROACHES • It is a way of dealing with a curriculam, a way of doing/ creating / dealing / thinking about a curriculam.

  3. CURRICULAM APPROACHES • There are four curriculam approaches: • Behavioural Approach • Managerial Approach • Systems Approach • Humanistic Approach

  4. Curriculam APproaches • Curriculam practioners and implementers may use one or more approaches in planning, implementing, and evaluating the curriculam.

  5. BEHAVIORAL APPROACH • Anchored on behaviorist principle: Based on a blue print- goals and objective are specified, contents and activities are also arranged to match with the learning objectives. • AIM- to achieve efficiency • In education, behavioral approach begins with educational plans that start with the setting of goals and objectives. • These are important ingredients in curriculam implementations as evaluating the learning outcomes as a change in behaviour. • Change in behavior indicates the measure of accomplishments.

  6. MANAGERIAL APPROACH • Become dominent in 1950’s and 1960’s. • Principle= Curriculam Leader Instructional leader General Manager Sets the policies and priorities, establishes the direction of change and inovation and planning and organizing curriculam and instruction.

  7. Curriculam Managers • Look at the curriculam changes and innovations as they administer the resources and resrtucture the schools.

Roles of the Curriculam Supervisors • Help develop the school’s educational goals. • Plan curriculam with students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. • Design programs of study by grade levels. • Plan or schedule classes or school calender. • Prepare curriculam guides or teacher guides by grade level or subject area. • Help in the evaluation and selection of textbooks. • Observe teachers

  9. 8.Assist teachers in the implementation of the curriculam. 9.Encourage curriculam inovation and change. 10. Develop standards for curriculam and instructional evaluation.

SYSTEM APPROACH • Influenced by system theory. • The parts of the total school district or school are examined in terms of how they relate to each other. • Organizations chart- represents a systems approach; shows the line- staff relationships of personal and how decisions are made. • George Beanchamp: the systems theory of education see the following to be equal importance: • Administration • Curriculam • Counseling • Instruction • Evaluation

HUMANISTIC APPROACH • Rooted in the progressive philosphy and child- centered movement. • Considers the formal or planned curriculam and the informal or hidden curricualm. • Considers the whole child and belives that in curricualm the total development of the individual is the prime consideration. • The learner is at the CENTRE of the curriculam.
