  3. Let’s start playing our role in the Indian Law system with understanding the difference between basic terms like lawyer, advocate etc. No one in the entire world is unfamiliar with Mahatma Gandhi. But, can anyone identify if he was a barrister, advocate or lawyer. Well, let’s learn about the key difference between the commonly used terms in the law world.

  4. Anyone who is a law graduate and holds an LLB degree of either three years or five years is a Lawyer. But, just being a lawyer you cannot stand for a client in court. Barrister:- This is almost the same as the lawyer, but the only difference is if you have obtained this degree from England, then you become a barrister. Just like lawyers, a barrister too cannot represent a lawyer in court. Lawyer:- Advocate:- If a lawyer enrolls himself in the bar council, then he can be called an Advocate. To enroll yourself in the bar council of India, you need to pass the exam. After successfully passing the exam, you get a license to practice in court. This promotes you from a lawyer to an advocate.

  5. The designation of Senior Advocate is given by the High Court/Supreme Court to advocates who have practiced as an advocate for more than 20 years, is 45 years old and have appeared in many cases. The High/Supreme court also analyses how many cases were won by them and how many were lost. After analyzing all these parameters, then the title of a senior advocate is given. Senior Advocate:- Advocate General:- The attorney general is known to represent the state government in court on matters related. They are known as the first legal officers of the country. The Attorney General is appointed by the President of India.

  6. Understanding these terms will help you to know your rights and duties better and will also help you to understand why better laws can redefine things to a huge extent. Conclusion
