Bachelor's in Ayurvedic Bachelor's in Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery Medicine & Surgery Over the last few years, the ancient science of Ayurveda that originated from the Indian subcontinent has taken the world by storm, many people around the world have become very regular practitioners of z Ayurveda and are relying on more herbal methods that Ayurveda tends to promote. Ayurveda has also marked its presence in the education sector now, and yes, this course is highly popular among medical students and a large number of students are turning up for it, the course is called bachelors in ayurvedic medicine and surgery. But what exactly is this new field of medical education and why it is becoming prominent. BAMS or bachelor's in ayurvedic medicine and surgery is an undergraduate medical course, it is a 5 ½ year course. The eligibility for BAMS is that a student should be 10 + 2 passed with at least 50 % in major subjects of physics, chemistry, biology, and English.

The course is divided into two parts the first one is for 4 ½ years that includes classroom theories and practical classes and 1 year is given for a full-time internship from the designated ayurvedic hospitals so that students can showcase what they have learned throughout their course. There are various specializations also provided in Ayurveda such as - • Kayachikitsa - Internal medicine • Shalakya Tantra - ears, nose, and throat • Vishagaravirodha tantra toxicology • Kumarabhritya pediatrics • Shalya tantra surgery • Vajikarana aphrodisiacs A BAMS graduate student can do any of these specializations in their masters. CCIM approved colleges are best for doing masters in ayurvedic medicine and surgery for better opportunities. Career opportunities for ayurvedic doctors have immensely increased after the world health organization has considered Ayurveda as the alternative form of medicinal science.

Ayurveda in itself is a unique branch of medical science as it focuses on treating the patient as a whole rather than focusing to treat the disease, it does by creating a balance between the three main components of the human body which in ayurvedic language are known as 3 doshas that are vata, pitta, and kapha. and this phenomenon of Ayurveda has provided it a good reputation, and people around the world look up to ayurvedic forms of treatments as a safer, cheaper, and more effective alternative to allopathy. A BAMS student upon completion of their degree can do detailed research on ayurvedic medicines, can set up their own clinic, or can also work in an ayurvedic or any general hospital which has a branch of Ayurveda. The ancient practice of Ayurveda which has its roots deep driven and interwoven with the cultural aspects of India are not only for specialized people as we see them, it not for saints or sages but an urban student with a medical background or an ayurvedic enthusiast can also learn and practice ayurvedic treatments now. Courses like BAMS have proved to be a connecting thread between ancient techniques and modern technology. In your 4 and ½ years of theories and practical you would be learning the following - 1st year - • Padartha vigyan and history of Ayurveda (Ayurveda itihasa) • Sanskrit • Kriya shareera • Rachana shareera • Maulik sidhanta

  4. 2nd year - • Dravyaguna vijnana • Agadtantra, vyavhar ayurved, Vidhivaidyak • Rasashastra and bhaishajya kalpana • Charak Samhita – purvardha 3rd year - • Rog - nidan • Swasthavritta • Prasuti tantra and stri rogas • Kaumarbhritya parichaya • Charak samhita 4th year - • Kayachikitsa • Panchkarma • Shalya tantra • Shalakya Tantra • Various research methodology and medical statistics.

  5. There is a compulsory internship program after completion of the course of 4 ½ years. This internship program starts after the declaration of results of final examinations and the student has to do the internship for one full year in order to receive practical experience from the field job.
