  3. What is Ergonomics? The Science of Fitting the Work to the Worker

  4. Injury Prevention • Defined as Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) • State Fund’s database indicates that about 70% of occupational injuries are ergonomic in nature (this includes back injuries) • Nationwide, the cost is billions of dollars a year in losses

  6. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor’s Degree • Typically in Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Medicine, Public Health • About 1/3 of all Industrial Hygienists have earned Master’s Degrees • About 1/3 of all Industrial Hygienists are Certified Industrial Hygienists

Recruitment & Retention Issues • Out of Class work • Industrial Hygienists are responsible for occupational health, but are regularly required to address occupational safety as well as Environmental/ Community Health & Safety. • Inappropriate Management (non-Sci Supervisors) • Little administrative support

Result of Recruitment & Retention Issues • Exodusoutof Industrial Hygiene classification • Retirement • Private Sector • A DTSC Technical Senior went to private sector for a 40K/year pay increase. DTSC has been unable to fill the vacancy despite repeated rounds of advertising. • Public Sector • Safety Engineer and other State classifications • Less duties • Less responsibilities • More pay

Result of R & R Issues • Difficulty Hiring for the vacancies created • DOSH • Last IH exams resulted in 8 possible candidates statewide • Toxics • Unable to fill the Technical Senior vacancy • Unable to hire for an Associate IH position in Berkeley • Sacramento positions difficult to fill • Corrections and Rehabilitation • Unable to hire for an Associate IH position in Sacramento 3 people met the MQs out of 27 applicants

  10. Result of R & R Issues (Cont) • Difficulty Hiring for the vacancies created • Integrated Waste Management Board • Unable to recruit external industrial Hygienists. • Fish and Game • Sacramento position lost when unfilled

  11. Result of Ergonomics R & R • Four staff resigned in past five years, of 7 Total in Class Series • Difficult to attract qualified candidates • Bay Area salaries not competitive
