The Winepress • Rev 14:18-20 • 18 Then another angel, the one who has power over fire, came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, " Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe." 19 So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses' bridles
Isa 63:3; Rev 14:20 different picture • Gethsemene—Jesus sweats—drops of blood alone, as the innocent sufferer. • The wine press figure – pictures God as the inflictor, not sufferer of vengeance. • God will avenge His son’s blood, and the blood of his people whose blood was shed (martyrs) by crushing them in the winepress of his wrath. • In the end… Jesus is coming back in the clouds to gather the elect from the four corners of the earth and dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, II Thess 1:8-9
