Last updated May 20,2018 So you have carefully written your article and probably ran it through your colleagues ten to fifteen times. While there are many elements to a good research article, one of the most important elements for your readers is the background of your study. The background of your study will provide context to the information discussed throughout the researchpaper. Background information may include both important and relevant studies. This is particularly important if a study either supports orrefutes yourthesis. https://www.enago.com/academy/what-is-background-in-a-research-paper/

  4. 8/2/2018 What is Background in a Research Paper? - EnagoAcademy In addition, the background of the study will discuss your problem statement, rationale, and research questions. It links introduction toyour research topicand ensures a logical flow of ideas. Thus, it helps readers understand your reasons for conducting thestudy. Providing BackgroundInformation The reader should be able to understand your topic and its importance. The length and detail of your background also depend on the degree to which you need to demonstrate your understanding of the topic. Paying close attention to the following questions will help you in writing backgroundinformation: Are there any theories, concepts, terms, and ideas that may be unfamiliar to the target audience and will require you to provide any additionalexplanation? Any historical data that need to be shared in order to provide context on why the current issueemerged? Are there any concepts that may have been borrowed from other disciplines that may be unfamiliar to the reader andneed anexplanation?  Related: Ready with the background and searching for more information on journal ranking? 5. 8/2/2018 What is Background in a Research Paper? - EnagoAcademy WhatMakestheIntroductionDi"erentfrom theBackground? Your introduction is di"erent from your background in a number ofways. First, the introduction contains preliminary data about your topic that the reader will most likelyread. Secondly, the background of your study discusses in depth about the topic, whereas the introduction only gives an overview. Lastly, your introduction should end with your research questions, aims, and objectives, whereas your background should not (except in some cases where your background is integrated into your introduction). For instance, the C.A.R.S. (Creating a Research Space) model, created by John Swales is based on his analysis of journal articles. This model attempts to explain and describe the organizational pattern of writing the introduction in socialsciences. Points toNote Your background should begin with defining a topic and audience. It is important that you identify which topic you need to reviewand what your audience already knows about the topic. You should proceed by searching and researching the relevant literature. In this case, it is advisable to keep track of the search terms you used and the articles that you downloaded. It is helpful to use one of the research paper management systems such as Papers, Mendeley, Evernote, or Sente. Next, it is helpful to take notes while reading. Be careful when copying quotes verbatim and make sure to put them in quotation marks and cite the sources. In addition, you should keep your background focused but balanced enough so that it is relevant to a broader audience. Aside from these, your background should be critical, consistent, and logicallystructured.  https://www.enago.com/academy/what-is-background-in-a-research-paper/

It provides appropriate recognition to all contributors for their hard work. We discuss here, the relevant guidelines for acknowledging contributors. Defining Who IsAcknowledged https://www.enago.com/academy/what-is-background-in-a-research-paper/

  8. 8/2/2018 What is Background in a Research Paper? - EnagoAcademy The acknowledgment section helps identify the contributors responsible for specific parts of the project. It can include authors, non-authors, funding sources, editing services, or even administrative sta". In academic writing, the information presented in the acknowledgment section should be kept brief. It should only mention people directly involved with the project. In other words, one should not consider thanking ones’ parents for moral and financialsupport. Authors Acknowledging contributors is necessary. However, you must know the di"erence between an author and a contributor. The International Committee of MedicalJournal Editors(ICMJE) defines four criteria to assignauthorship. He or she has tohave Made substantial conceptual or design contributions or gathered and analyzed important data, and Either helped draft or critically revise the paper in keeping with important intellectual content, and Provided final approval before publishing, and Agreed to be accountable for the accuracy of thework These authors and their a liations will be listed at the beginning of the paper. The “corresponding author” will also be listed a second time and will directly correspond with the journal to ensure documentation requirements aremet. Many journals now ask that you provide the role of each author in your acknowledgment section. For example, a typical statement ofauthors’ contributions might be as follows (note that only last names are used unlessambiguous): https://www.enago.com/academy/what-is-background-in-a-research-paper/

  9. 8/2/2018 What is Background in a Research Paper? - EnagoAcademy  Smith conducted the data analysis and created thetables and figures. Jones provided his technological expertise for GIS tracking. Johnson provided a factual review and helped edit themanuscript. This type of acknowledgment provides your reader with a good sense of who was responsible for each part of your research andmanuscript. Non-AuthorContributors There are many people involved in a research project who are not authors but have provided valuable contributions. For example, one person’s responsibility might be to seek project funding; another’s might be to supervise laboratory sta". A few others might have providedvaluable services such as technical editing and writing or o"ering help inreviewing https://www.enago.com/academy/what-is-background-in-a-research-paper/

These people should also be mentioned in the acknowledgment section of your manuscript.  Acknowledgment should also beprovidedfor writing assistance, technical editing, language editing, and proofreading. Therefore, editing companies need to beduly acknowledged in professionally edited manuscripts as per the ICMJEguidelines. It is necessary to acknowledge editing companiesin professionally edited manuscripts, even though these companies are paid for theirwork. AcknowledgmentFormat Unlike the main body of your paper, the format foryour acknowledgment sectioncan be more personal. It is permissible to use personal pronouns in this section.
