  2. About RiyaazQawwali The art of qawwali, as with most of the great Asian musical and literary tra­ditions, is transmitted orally ... The vehicle of music is used to bring one closer to the experience of the inner truth. Riyaazqawwalwill dwell on certain words to give them a wider context creating great depth in the apparently simple language ... He will often repeat a phrase or sentence indicating both the obvious and hidden content by empha­sizing or ruminating upon particular words and syllables, taking the audi­ence into the discovery of hitherto obscure meanings. Thus, mundane objects are embued with deeper mean­ing — a spinning wheel becomes the wheel of life. Qawwali is a venerable yet refreshing musical tradition that dates back to the late 13th century. The word qaul refers to an "utterance (of the prophet)" and the first Qawwals (qawwali artists) repeated these qauls by making them the subject matter of their qawwalis.

RiyaazQawwali is an ensemble that represents the unique diversity and plurality of South Asia. The ensemble’s musicians, who are settled in the United States, hail from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and also represent multiple religious and spiritual backgrounds. Trained in eastern and western classical music, the members have been professionally performing qawwali for the past eleven years. With conservative growth and heightened attention to quality, RiyaazQawwali has performed across the continental U.S., as well as internationally in Panama.

  5. RiyaazQawwali’s mission is to expose qawwali to new audiences, while still paying homage to traditional qawwali that has been in existence for 700+ years. The ensemble wants to expand the reach of the genre to new stages and people of other faiths and traditions. The founding members of RiyaazQawwali chose the qawwali genre of music because it houses unique musical elements in its repertoire that are not found in any other form of South Asian music.

  6. ISHQ - RIYAAZ QAWWALI'S LATEST ALBUM RiyaazQawwali’s 2nd CD features ghazals that are composed and performed in qawwali style. The selected pieces range from contemporary to classic poets. The CD tracks take writings that may have one angle and add another dimension more commonly found in qawwalis.

  7. KASHTI - RIYAAZ QAWWALI'S FIRST ALBUM Kashti was the debut album of the RiyaazQawwali ensemble and was released in June 2013 and was commercially made available in the Spring of 2014. Kashti, which mean boat or vessel in Urdu and Hindi, was selected as the title to exemplify the ensemble's use of music as a vessel to explore different religious traditions and their linguistic, philosophical, cultural, and moral confluence.
