  1. SUMMERTIME DRIVING DANGERS Many would suspect that winter is the most dangerous time for drivers. Surprisingly, this isn’t the case. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the highest number of car crashes, related injuries, and deaths occur in the summer months. In a twenty-four year-long study, the months of June, July, and August carry a 24% higher risk of car accidents. Several factors contribute to this, including more people on the road (cars, motorcycles, and bicycles) and more teenage drivers. There is also an increase in distracted driving and incidents of driving under the influence. Here are five common driving dangers to be aware of. 1. Distracted Driving Distracted driving is always a hazard, but more so during the summer. People are taking road trips with family and friends and are feeling carefree. Talking, eating, and drinking takes our attention off the road. Keep this in mind and drive defensively. 2. Motorcycles and Bicycles In nice weather, people tend to take out their motorcycles and bicycles to enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, accidents occur when bicycles and motorcycles share the road with cars. Often these accidents happen because drivers don’t see them. Carefully check your mirrors before you change lanes, turn or parallel park, and be mindful of potential blind spots.

  2. 3. Impaired Drivers During the holidays and summer months, there is an increase in alcohol-related crashes. Also, studies show that due to the COVID pandemic, there has been an increase in substance abuse. As the state opens back up, people are gathering for social events and traveling to see family and friends. Because we are coming out of lockdown, this celebratory attitude may be more pronounced. Be watchful for any unusual or reckless behavior out on the roads. 4. Pedestrians There are more pedestrians out during summer. They can be hard to see and can step out on the road at any time. Be particularly mindful of children playing in neighborhoods and parks. 5. Young Drivers During the summer, school is out of session, and there are more teenagers out driving throughout the day. In the U.S., more than 30% of fatal accidents involving teenagers occur during July and August. Talk to your teenagers about using extra caution when driving. As a driver, be vigilant during this time and practice patience with inexperienced drivers. Injured in an Accident?
