CATARACT Types and Symtoms
TABLE OF CONTENTS Presentation Outline Introduction Symptoms Causes Types
WHAT IS CATARACT? Cataracts are a painless clouding of your eye's internal lens. Cataracts make it difficult to see clearly and can even cause blindness over time because they prevent light from passing through the lens. Cataracts are progressive, which means they worsen over time. The majority of cases are seen in older people, but they can also be seen in younger people. Normal Eye Cataract Eye
Effects Of Cataract Cataracts commonly affect both eyes, but it is not uncommon for cataracts in one eye to progress more quickly than cataracts in the other. Cataracts are extremely common. When people develop cataracts, they begin to have difficulty performing activities that they require for daily living or recreation. Some of the most common complaints are difficulty driving at night, reading, participating in sports such as golf, or travelling to new places.
SYMPTOMS OF CATARACT? Cataracts are a common part of the eye’s aging process. Eventually, they can cause: Vision that's hazy, blurry, foggy, or cloudy. Sensitivity to bright sunlight, lamps or headlights.
It can be difficult to see the lights at night when oncoming headlights create a halo around them. Changes in prescriptions of glasses, including sudden nearsightedness.
Double vision. Need for brighter light to read. Difficulty seeing at night (poor night vision). Changes in the way you see color.
WHAT CAUSES CATARACTS? There are several underlying causes of cataracts. These include: Overproduction of oxidants, which are oxygen molecules that have been chemically altered due to normal daily life Smoking Ultraviolet Radiation The long-term use of steroids and other medications Certain diseases, such as diabetes Trauma Radiation therapy
TYPES OF CATARACT? THERE ARE THREE PRIMARY TYPES OF CATARACTS: NUCLEAR SCLEROTIC CATARACTS CORTICAL CATARACTS POSTERIOR SUBCAPSULAR CATARACTS
NUCLEAR SCLEROTIC CATARACTS The cloudiness, hardening, and yellowing of the nucleus of the lens in the eye is referred to as uclear sclerosis. Nuclear sclerosis is a very common condition in humans. It is also possible in dogs, cats, and horses. It usually manifests itself in older people. Reliable Source. These changes are caused by the ageing of the eye. A nuclear cataract occurs when the sclerosis and clouding are severe enough. The usual treatment for cataract-affected vision is surgery to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial lens.
CORTICAL CATARACTS Cortical cataracts are a kind of cataract that develops in the edges of the lens and then make their way towards the center in a spoke-like manner. A cortical cataract occurs in the edges of the lens – the cortex – hence the name cortical cataracts.
POSTERIOR SUBCAPSULAR CATARACTS Posterior Subcapsular cataract is a type of cataract in which the crystalline lens's posterior or back portion is opacified. This type of cataract can occur on its own or in conjunction with other types of cataracts.
