Title: MLA Handbook: Ninth edition The Modern Language Association of America New York, 2021 [2.48] Hyphens versus en dashes p.g. 32
[2.48] Hyphens versus en dashes If a lowercase compound that would not be hyphenated under the above guidelines forms a single adjective with another word or a prefix, hyphenate the entire adjective. civil rights legislation → post-civil-rights legislation cultural studies approach → cultural-studies-based approach
But when a compound is formed from a prefix and a proper noun composed of more than one word, use an en dash (a dash the length of the letter n) in place of a hyphen. The en dash indicates that the prefix is meant to connect to the entire capitalized term that follows and not only to the first word of the capitalized term. World War II era → post–World War II era hyphen - en dash – [ l -- l l – l ]
