  2. What Exactly is Botox? Botox® is a type of injection that helps reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles on the face by relaxing facial muscles. The main types of wrinkles treated are crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles, however it can also be used for vertical lines around the lips and mouth, as well as neck bands. Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear on the face when you make facial expressions. As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and thus its ability to bounce back after it has been pulled by the muscle beneath it.

  3. How does Botox work? Botox® is the name given to commercial brand botulinum toxin, which comes from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. (other commercial products exist such as Dysport®, Xeomin®) This protein acts at the microscopic level at the points where your nerves meet your muscles, called neuromuscular junctions. When a nerve wants to make a muscle contract, it releases a chemical called acetylcholine. When the facial muscles relax, the skin they pull will also relax, which helps reduce the appearance of the dynamic wrinkles that have accumulated over time. It can take up to 2 weeks for you to see the final, full effect of the procedure. It is possible that you may need multiple treatments in order to achieve your desired results.

  4. Does Botox have any side effects? How long Botox last? Although Botox® is a toxin, it rarely has any severe side effects. Most frequently, patients experience some redness, bruising, and swelling in the areas where the injection was given, but these will subside on their own within a couple of days. Pain is usually very mild, and if it leads to any discomfort, it can be treated with over- the-counter medications. It is possible that the toxin reaches muscles outside of the area you wanted treated and relaxes them as well, but this will also resolve on its own. Botulinum toxin can be broken down by your body. As such, your results will be temporary. On average, results can last up to 4 months. It will be possible for you to book follow-up appointments if you wish in order to maintain your results. You may discuss with your doctor the time interval at which you will be able to schedule these additional sessions.
