  1. 10T-ShirtDesignTipsforBetterResults EveryonelovesagreatT-shirtdesign.Butwhatmakesforanimpressivedesignthatpeoplewanttorepeatedlywear?Althoughsomeofthegreatestdesignslooksimply,eventhesimplestdesignsneedtoavoidthemostcommonmistakestoachievethatgreatness. HerearemytenT-shirtdesigntips,basedon25yearsofexperienceinthecustomprintingbusiness. 1.Setamodestprintsize Theremaybethingsinlifewheresizedoesn’tmatter,butat-shirtdesignisnotoneofthem.Acommonmistakeispeoplesettheirdesigntostandardsize.Butstandardisclosetothemaximum,whichcanbetoolargeformostdesigns. Thesizeofadesignshouldbebasedonthepurposeoftheshirt,thepropertiesofthegarment,andthecharacteristicsofthedesignitself. Keepinmindthatcertainshapes,likecirclesandsquares,lookbetterwhensizedsmallerthanstandard.Considerthetotalsurfaceareaoftheprint,notjustthewidthandheight. Additional sizing considerations: Onesizedoesn’tfitall.ForlargerorderswithavarietyofT-shirtsizes,considerreducingtheprintsize on the smaller garments. Ifyou’rechoosinguniqueprintplacement,makesureyouhaveagoodreason.ManypeoplenewtoT-shirtdesigndon’tknowthatastandardfullfrontplacementisn’thalfwaybetweentheshirt’stopandbottom.It’sactuallyaround 4″ from the collar. So a common mistake is the belly print, and it’sneverflattering. Focusonfontsandtypography Typography,initsmostbasicform,isthevisualarrangementofwords(nottobeconfusedwiththefont,whichisthestyleofthetext).Anytimetextgetsprintedordisplayed,goodorbad,thereistypographyinvolved. Ingraphicdesign,typographyistheartoftypesetting:arrangingtypeinawaythatmakessense,alongwithchoosingappropriatetypefaces(fonts),makingsuretheletterspacingandlinespacingiscorrect,anddesigningthewaythewordsinteractwiththegraphicelementstobeaestheticallypleasing. Butyoudon’tneedtobeatrainedartisttogetthetypographyright.Youjustneedtofollowsomebasicrules. Takecarewithcomposition Compositionissomethingyoumayrememberfromyourhighschoolartclass.Everydesignhaselementsarrangedinrelationtoeachother,whichmakesuptheoverallcomposition.Gooddesignisallaboutcomposition. Typicalmistakesincludeelementsthataretoospacedapartorbuncheduptogether.Sometimestheentiredesigncanbeoff-balance,drawingtheeyetothewrongplace.Orifyou’reespeciallycareless,thetypereadsinthewrongorderandruinsthemessage.

  3. 5.Ensureimagequality Oneofthemostcommonproblemswithcustomer-submittedartfilesisthatimagesare“lowresolution”.Whatthatmeansistheydon’thaveenoughpixelinformationtogiveusthequalityanddetailsthatmakeforgoodprintquality. Ideally,imagesshouldbe200dpiorhigheratfullsize.Upto300dpiisbest.Imagesfromthewebaretypically72dpi,andnotatthesizetobeprinted. Anotherproblemwithlow-resimagesisvisibleartifactsfromcompression.Keepinmind,theprintwillonlybeasclearastheimagewe’restartingwith– sostartingwithahigh-qualityimageiskey. Becarefulwithcolors Colorchoiceisoneofthemostimportantdecisions.Notonlyfordesignreasonsbutifyouwantscreenprinting,tomakesurethejobfitsyourbudget.Morecolorsequalmorecostperitem. Typically,screenprintingisbettersuitedforsolidcolorsandalimitedcolorpalette. Considerthecontrast Contrastisapartofcolorchoice,butit’saspecificandimportantparttoconsider.Whatexactlyiscontrast?Itsthedegreeofvisualdifferencebetweenthedarkerandlighterpartsofanimage,orthewayshadesofcolorscorrespondtoeachother. High-contrastdesignsareeasiertoreadandmorein-your-face,whilelow-contrastdesignsaremoresubtle.Thestrongestcontrastisalwaysgoingtobeblack-on-whiteorviceversa.Brightcolorsonadarkbackgroundaregoingtobehighcontrast. Thedesignitselfcandictatetheoverallcontrast,asfarasthecontentandwhatcolorshavethemostsurfaceareaorarethemostdominant.Acrazy,eye-catchingimagealongwithsaturatedcolorswillgreatlyincreasethecontrastagainstaneutralbackground. 8.Invertnegativeimages Inversionisafairlycommonstepthatmustbedone,usuallywhenprintinglightinkonblackgarments.Unlessthereisaspecificreason,youprobablydon’twantyourphototolooklikeanx-ray.
