This date Understanding the Islamic Calendar The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It began in 622 CE with the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is solar, the Islamic calendar is based on the phases of the moon. Importance of Dhu al-Qi'dah Dhu al-Qi'dah is one of the four sacred months in Islam, during which warfare is traditionally prohibited.
