  1. Great Ways to Learn French When learning a new language, it can be a really tough time. French is one that is supposed to be fairly easy to learn for English speakers because there are a lot of the same roots in French that there are in English. That said, there are many words that are annoyingly confusing. Off the top of my head, “ananas” is really confusing. My sister taught it to me and said it is a fruit. From the pronunciation, it sounds just like you are saying “banana,” but with a French accent. In fact, it is not a banana at all, instead being the word for pineapple. Consequently, pomplemousse is neither a pompous moose nor a pompous mousse, but instead the word for grapefruit. In trying to learn French, here are a few ways that have worked for others in the past to become fluent.

  2. Watch French Television There are plenty of stories about people who come to America having learned English through the sitcoms that travelled overseas. In many ways, pop culture is one of America’s greatest exports and that has led to people learning English too. It might have led to a few mistakes in usage or people sounding like a wacky neighbor too often, but it can be a great jumping off point for learning a new language as well. Netflix has brought us plenty of TV shows to watch in English and they are always coming out with new stuff, but their international selection is almost as large and there are some fantastic shows to come from France. One that I have heard a ton of great reviews for is called Call My Agent, about a Parisian talent agency and the scramble to keep star clients happy and employed in the media industry. It is a fun show as well as one that can teach you about speech. The great thing about learning this way is that you can learn more conversational French instead of just the academic view of the language. Other shows include The Hookup Plan, a horror show called Marianne, the period piece Versailles, a crime show called Black Spot, a sci fi show called Osmosis, a pot comedy called Family Business, and many more. French Tutor The more traditional way to learn French is through a French tutor. This way, you can have someone teach you things in the order that you want or they can help in the order that they have trained people with in the past. French tutors are also a great resource when it comes to learning the culture of France, which differs from our own in the US. There are many things about French life that are fascinating and French tutors can help you not only with your language skills, but also with your French life skills. That way, when you go to France, you will seem like a natural. Doing business with the French becomes way easier when you have used a French tutor to teach you the proper business terms. If you bought a tutoring package in the past, you may even have hours left over that you didn’t use on your GMAT tutor.
