Morbid Obesity and Bariatric Surgery By Dr Pradeep Jain

Morbid Obesity Treatment BY Dr Pradeep Jain - Chief of Department of GI at Action

Cancer Hospital & Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute.

The term "Morbid" is defined in the Concise Oxford Dictionary

as " abnormal , caused by a mental disorder.." Morbid obesity

is the result of excessive accumulation of fat that exceeds the

standards of the skeleton and physical standards

Research has shown that in many cases an important cause of

morbid obesity is genetic - you inherit the tendency to gain

weight. The combination of a genetic predisposition to weight

gain and heavy consumption of processed foods and easily

accessible has led to the obesity epidemic in North America and

around the world .

List of factors that contribute to the development of Morbid Obesity :

Genetic predisposition to be obese .

Easy access to processed foods in abundance and the inability or lack of desire for physical activity.

Psychosocial problems, such as an abused child who will rush on food for her depression caused by bearing

the taunts.

Eating disorders.

Metabolic disorders.

Obesity Treatment Options By Dr Pradeep Jain –

Most non-surgical weight loss programs are based on a combination of diet, behavior modification, and

regular exercise. However, published scientific papers report that these methods do not help resolve morbid

obesity because they fail to help people maintain weight loss. In fact, more than 95% of people regain the

weight they lose within a few years after treatment.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass By Dr Pradeep Jain –

This procedure reduces the size of the stomach thus reducing the amount of food one can eat at a time. It also

alters the digestion by absorbing less of the food eaten. It causes intolerance to food that has concentrated

sugars. Average hospital stay is two nights and average weight loss is 85% of excess body weight.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding By Dr Pradeep Jain -

In this procedure, a soft band lined with an adjustable balloon on the inside is placed around the stomach so

that it takes the shaped of an hour glass. It reduces hunger and restricts the amount of food that one can eat

at a time, thus helping to lose weight. Success of this procedure depends on proper adjustment of the balloon

and restricting high calorie liquids. The average hospital stay in one night and the average weight loss is 55-

60% of excess body weight.

Result :

The results of bariatric surgery are great. The average weight loss is 55% to 85% depending on the

procedure. There is an improvement or remission of diabetes in over 90%, high blood pressure in over 80%,

sleep apnea in over 75%, and significant reduction in the rates of heart attack, stroke and cancer .
