  1. ESSENTIAL POOL SAFETY TIPS EVERY FAMILY SHOULD KNOW

  2. As summer approaches, many families eagerly await to spend their time in the backyard pool. The pool is a source of endless fun and an excellent option to cool down from scorching heat; however, it also poses certain risks, especially when there are kids around. Ensuring pool safety is a good practice and essential in protecting your loved ones. This is the right time to get introduced to the basic pool safety rules that everyone in a family should follow.

  3. 1. Supervision is Key Never leave children in or around the pool unattended- not even for an instant. Drowning can happen in a matter of seconds. That’s why having a designated adult whose attention is specifically directed to those in the water is essential. The supervisor should be close enough to young children and weak swimmers – ideally within arm’s reach. Avoid distractions such as mobile phones and conversations that could divert your attention.

  4. 2. Establish Pool Rules Clear rules should be established for pool users. Examples include not running on the deck, not diving into shallow water and no rough play. All using the pool, including guests, are to know and adhere to these. If children are younger, it may take multiple explanations and questions about why they are in place.

  5. 3. Install Barriers and Alarms A pool fence is one of the most effective safety measures you can take and is also requirement for all pools. The fence should be compliant to the Australian Standard AS1926. The most effective element to the barrier is a self closing and latching gate so making sure the gate is working correctly is something to check regularly.

  6. 4. Teach Swimming and Water Safety Skills Swimming lessons can be a lifesaver, literally. Ensure that everyone who uses the pool, especially children, has basic swimming skills. In addition to swimming, teach kids how to float and tread water. It’s also important for everyone to know how to get out of the pool safely, especially using a ladder or steps.

  7. 5. Know CPR and First Aid In the event of an emergency, knowing how to perform CPR can make a critical difference. Parents and caregivers should be trained in CPR and first aid, and phone and emergency contacts should be kept near the pool area. Regularly refresh your skills to ensure you’re prepared for any situation.

  8. 6. Use Life Jackets and Safety Gear For children and non-swimmers, life jackets or floatation devices are essential. One very important thing to keep in mind is never to depend on a flotation device to keep someone safe, but always be at hand and ready for an intervention.

  9. 7. Set a Good Example Children learn by example from adults, so practice good pool safety yourself. Always follow the rules and avoid unsafe behaviour while showing that safety is a priority. Your actions reinforce how important it is for everyone to practice pool safety. These are some of the simple safety rules for pools, which will help you make the most of your pool with friends and family of all ages.
