  1. El Niño Could Reduce Thailand’s Rice Output By Up To 6 Per El Niño Could Reduce Thailand’s Rice Output By Up To 6 Percent This Year Year cent This Ranking behind India, Thailand is the second largest rice exporter in the world. It exports bulk rice every year and has earned its name as a reliable rice supplier in the global rice market. Favorable climatic conditions help the Asian nation harvest and export bulk volumes of rice every year. However, things might change this year owing to El Nino weather phenomenon. According to a forecast by the Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC), Thailand’s rice output is set to drop this year by as much as 6 per cent and will stand between 25.1 million tonnes to 25.6 million tonnes due to the impact of El Nino weather pattern. Predictions By The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) Predictions By The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) have predicted that combined with domestic harvest of 7.6 million tonnes from the second crop, Thailand’s rice production will be between 32.7 million tonnes to 33.2 million tonnes this year. The KRC believes that this will be enough to meet the domestic consumption needs and fulfill rice export orders as well. However, it has warned that the production figures might change if drought like conditions exist for an extended period of time. The KRC have raised alarms that El Nino weather phenomenon can cause drop in water levels in numerous reservoirs and as a result both main and second rice crop will be hampered.

  2. To tackle the challenge, it has urged the concerned agencies to come up with appropriate water management plans so that there remains sufficient water for rice cultivation and other purposes even in the event of El-Nino weather phenomenon. Thai Farmers Going For Second Rice Crop Despite Risks Thai Farmers Going For Second Rice Crop Despite Risks Owing to the alarms raised by the Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC), the Royal Irrigation Department has urged the farmers located in the Chao Phraya River basin to suspend the cultivation of the second crop. However, despite this, many farmers are still going ahead with planting of the second crop. Attractive export prices of Thai rice and high global demand has stoked them to go ahead and plant second rice crop despite the risk of severe water shortage, due to El Nino effect. The Bottom Line The Bottom Line Weather and climatic conditions play a crucial role in influencing the domestic crop production and changes in weather patterns can easily hamper the domestic production volumes. This can be better understood with the case of Thailand. Thailand is the second largest rice exporter in the world. Enjoying favorable climatic conditions, it harvests and ships bulk volumes of rice every year. However, things might change this time around, owing to El Nino weather phenomenon. The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) has warned that Thailand’s domestic rice production might drop significantly than anticipated if drought like conditions exist for an extended period of time and have raised alarms in this regard.
