  2. Both parents and children experience significant stress and anxiety before surgery. The anesthesiology team provides many activities to decrease or eliminate anxiety during preoperative and pre-induction periods. Myriad techniques were used to reduce stress before and during induction the anxiety created is associated with adverse psychological effects during the postoperative period, such as delirium and increased pain after surgery and behavior problems at home such as aggression, regression, eating disturbances, nightmares, night terrors and bedwetting. In the perioperative period, there are stress points, periods of time, when anxiety rises, These stress points include entry to the operating room, separation from the parents, imagining syringes, attachments of medical equipment, etc…Placement of the anesthesia mask has been shown to be the most stressful part of the process. At PeDIA, our main goal is to reduce these stress points as much as possible before and during induction, i.e. taking the child from an awake state to an anesthetized state PeDIA offers unique and innovative pre-induction techniques to ease a child’s fears. Our state-of-the-art strategies for comfortable anesthesia:

  3. As we know, standard mask induction works has been used for a century, no because it is the best way to induce a child, but there were no alternatives. The child is placed on the operating room (or a caregiver’s lap) while a confining, plastic anesthesia mask is fixed over his or her nose and mouth, piping in anesthesia gases. The stench of the gases and claustrophobic feeling of the mask are more than many children can bear. When the child resists, they are held still—held down against their will. If this were forced on an adult, it would be considered assault. So why do we allow it with children? It is not right. Since a child’s best coping mechanism is play, we, at PEDIA decided to transform the operating room into a playroom. We introduced the PEDIA Anesthesia Balloon. A balloon is a familiar toy to a child, one that puts them at ease. PEDIA are bright, colorful, and playful. They even make a whistling sound when the child uses it. Change: Change is necessary, especially in a 21st century operating room. Mindset and protocols must change to keep up with the times. PeDIA is up to the challenge. When a child and parent enter the operating room, give them the full attention they deserve. Instead of counting instruments continuing with operation room

  4. talk, be mindful of the noise level and child’s level of fear. Remember, the child is the most important person in the operation room; treat them with courtesy, dignity, and respect. Have one person speak to the child. We suggest that be a member of the anesthesia team. If the child has not been oriented in the preoperative area to the PEDIA, allow them to choose their PEDAI (they come in three colors). Choice is important to a child under stress. Once the PEDIA is primed with gases , hand it to the child and applaud their efforts as they inhale and exhale through the device. Cheer them on as the whistles sounds and the balloon inflates and deflates with their efforts. Before anyone knows it, the child will be asleep. The mission of PEDIA is provide a stellar induction process. Our vision is to provide a stress-free, mask free induction experience. Our innovative pediatric assistive devices, allows a child to play away their stress and anxiety and avoid the negative postoperative behavior changes. This may also help to stimulate trust in medical personnel. Wrap Up: With the introduction of innovative pediatric devices, PeDIA helps replace stress & anxiety with something colorful & fun.
