The primary ASTM tests used at Molygraph include: 1.ASTM D 6138: EMCOR Rust Test This test evaluates a grease’s ability to resist rust formation in bearings exposed to water. New bearings are thoroughly cleaned, lubricated with the grease under examination, and partially immersed in water. The setup is operated at 83 ± 5 rpm for one week, alternating between running and stopping cycles. After the test, the bearings are cleaned, examined, and rated based on the extent of corrosion. This ensures that the grease performs efficiently as a corrosion protector in challenging environments. 2.ASTM D 1743: Corrosion Preventive Test In this test, bearings are cleaned, lubricated, and subjected to a thrust load for 60 ± 3 seconds. This load ensures that the lubricant forms a consistent layer resembling patterns observed in real-world service conditions. The bearings are then exposed to water and stored for 48 ± 0.5 hours at 52 ± 1°C with 100% relative humidity. After this duration, the bearings are examined for corrosion. This test confirms that the grease has excellent corrosion preventive properties, protecting components under humid and wet conditions. 3.ASTM D 4048: Copper Corrosion Test This test assesses a grease’s compatibility with copper components, which are common in machinery. A polished copper strip is immersed in a sample of the grease and heated in a liquid bath or oven at 100 ± 1°C for 24 ± 5 minutes. After heating, the copper strip is cleaned and compared to a standardized chart to evaluate corrosion levels. The results ensure that the grease does not cause harmful chemical reactions with copper components, maintaining their structural integrity.
