Boston, MA; July 9, 2010- Dr. Fred Cobey is pleased to announce that he will be leaving for Sudan on July 27th, and will be working with Emergency in Sudan for three months as a cardiac anesthesiologist at the Salam Center for Cardiac Surgery. The hospital itself is located in Soba, 20 kilometers south of Sudan's capital, Khartoum and is run by the international humanitarian group, Emergency, that is based out of Milan, Italy.

Dr. Cobey has worked with Emergency in the past in Afghanistan performing trauma surgery. Now that he has retrained in anesthesia, he is going back overseas in this different professional capacity. "I have always loved working in Africa, and in fact, it was during my time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chad, Africa in the mid 1990's that I decided to apply to medical school. Seeing the human need in Chad, I was motivated to find a skill could help me be useful in these kinds of extreme circumstances." says Fred Cobey.

"Many working in international health may question why Emergency has invested in a cardiac hospital in Sudan, and question if a cardiac hospital is really its greatest need. Certainly, these criticisms are understandable. However, the purpose of this project is to respect human dignity and in doing such, to provide the same quality of care to humans in Sudan as people have in the so called developed world. The message of the hospital and Emergency is that all humans regardless of where they are born are deserving of health care."

About Dr. Fred Cobey

While attending medical school at Yale, Fred Cobey used whatever elective time was available to take time to work overseas in Africa and Asia. After finishing Yale, he studied surgery and then eventually went to Afghanistan to care for civilian war victims. Fred Cobey then studied anesthesia at Harvard's Brigham and Women's hospital and just recently completed a fellowship at Duke in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia. Fred Cobey has always been inspired by great physicians in such as Dr. Albert Schweitzer, and even had the opportunity to work at his hospital in Lambarene, Gabon a few years ago. "I think it is important to allow ourselves to be inspired by such figures in the past." Doctors such as Dr. Paul Farmer and Dr. Gino Strada continue to inspire Fred Cobey and many others today. Having seen the human need outside the United States, Dr. Cobey plans to continue to work in international health throughout his career as a physician and feels very lucky to have been given the opportunity to serve in Sudan with Emergency.
