  1. Earth Statistics • Earth circumference= 40,007 km at poles and 40,074 at the equator • Earth spins on its axis once in 24 hrs. (Axis is an imaginary line through the center of the Earth from pole to pole) • Average Diameter is 12,735 km

  2. Hydrosphere • 71% of the surface is covered with water • 97% of the water is located in the salty oceans • 3% is fresh water, most of this is locked in polar ice caps and glaciers

  3. Atmosphere • Earth’s surrounding gases= 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, and trace amounts of Argon, Carbon Dioxide and Helium

  4. Earth’s Interior

  5. Earth’s Magnetic Field • Affects a region in space around the Earth called the Magnetosphere • Is most likely the result of electrical currents generated by movement of liquid iron in Earth’s outer core.

  6. Magnetic field being hit by solar wind

  7. Solar wind helps create Northern Lights

  8. Revolution/Rotation • Earth REVOVLES around the sun in a YEAR=365.24 days • Earth ROTATES around its axis in day= 24 hours

  9. Perihelion/Aphelion • Perihelion – Earth is closest to the sun (147,000,000 km, January 3rd) • Aphelion – Earth is farthest from the sun 152,000,000 km, July 4th)

  10. Seasons • Seasons change because the angle of the sun’s rays striking the Earth changes slightly with each passing month. • Summer in the Northern hemisphere = Winter in the Southern hemisphere • Spring in the Northern hemisphere = Autumn in the Southern hemisphere

  11. Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) • June 21st or 22nd , The suns rays strike at a 90 degree angle on the Tropic of Cancer. • Most daylight hours in 24 hour period.

  12. Winter Solstice(Northern Hemisphere) • The suns rays strike the Earth at a 90 degree angle at the Tropic of Capricorn. • The least daylight hours in a 24 hour period • December 21-22

  13. Equinox Suns rays strike the equator at a 90 degree angle. • Vernal Equinox occurs on March 21-22 • Autumnal Equinox occurs on September 22-23 • Equal length of daylight(12 hrs) and nighttime(12hrs) hours.
