Chinese civilization began 3000 years before the birth of
Christ and can lay claim as being the oldest continuous
culture in the world. The art of painting is recorded in
Chinese culture seven centuries before the birth of Christ. The
first Chinese painter was a woman by the name of Lei (lah-
EE) and the sister of emperor Shun (2255 to 2205 B.C.)
Japan owes much of its existence to China for their artistic
development and written language.
It is an Oriental art that uses Chinese characters to communicate the spiritual world of the artist.
