In the broadest sense, leadership development is critical to the future success of any organization. Evidence shows that when faced with rapid change, even the most effective leaders can start to lose focus. The problem is that over a period of time, senior executives become less responsive to external changes. In other words, even though the context is changing with new technology and shifting customer expectations, leaders become less skilled in their analysis of these changes. Coaching provides the foundation for constructive dialogue, which helps people evaluate how best to focus their energy and attention. It is not simply a matter of focusing on personal strengths and weaknesses. It’s equally important to identify the expectations of other people, and what action is required to deliver quality outcomes. These demands are not simply restricted to private sector organizations. They also apply to the public sector. For example, a national police force needs to ensure that information can be shared quickly across different regions and police officers must be able to identify trends and patterns emerging from data. The ability to interpret data, see connections and prioritize information in the context of key objectives is now required at all levels, and across many organizations. Progression Planning Leadership training is important for anyone in a team leading role, and senior professionals who need to engage effectively with people in other departments or agencies. This requires an appreciation of the overall objectives and the current contribution made by different people to the overall process. Identifying future talent, therefore involves identifying the type of mindset that supports superior performance. This is sometimes described in terms of Learning Agility and Cognitive Flexibility. In other words, is the context changes, we need to apply existing knowledge in new ways and identify how best to respond to changing conditions. Not everyone has this ability, so progression planning is a priority for future success.
