  2. www.takshilalearning.com What is a fraction? A fraction is a portion or a part of a whole. In ordinary English, a fraction denotes the number of pieces of a specific size, such as two-forth, one-sixth etc. When a number, decimal or an integer is expressed in the form of p/q, where we call p the numerator and q the denominator, then it is said to be a fraction. What are the types of fractions? There are three types of fractions: 1.Proper fraction 2.Improper fractions 3.Mixed fractions What is a proper fraction? If a fraction written in the form of p/q has a numerator p, smaller than the denominator q, it is called a proper fraction. For example, ⅙ is a proper fraction because the numerator (1) is smaller than the denominator (6). What is an improper fraction? Call @08045681010/8800999284

  3. www.takshilalearning.com If a fraction written in the form of p/q has a numerator p, greater than the denominator q, it is called an improper fraction. For example, 7/3 is an improper fraction because the numerator (7) is greater than the denominator (3). What is a mixed fraction? An improper fraction represented as the sum of a whole number and a proper fraction is known as a mixed fraction. It is represented in the form of a(b/c), where a is the whole number, b is the numerator of the proper fraction and c is the denominator of the proper fraction. How do we add/subtract proper or improper fractions? To add/subtract proper or improper fractions with the same denominator, say a, we just simply have to add/subtract the numerators, say their sum/difference is y and then write it in the fraction from where the numerator is y and denominator is a. For example, 1/6 + 2/6 = (1+2)/6 = 3/6 To add/subtract proper or improper fractions with different denominators, we first need to find the LCM of the denominators, say x, and then multiply a number to each denominator to make them equal to x. The number that you multiply with the denominator, must be multiplied by the numerator too, to keep the fraction the same. For example, ⅙ + ⅔ Call @08045681010/8800999284

  4. www.takshilalearning.com LCM of 6 and 3 is 6. In order to make the denominators the same, we will multiply the fraction ⅔ with 2 and similarly to keep the fraction the same, we will multiply the numerator with 2. (2×2)/ (3×2) = 4/6 Thus now the equation becomes, 1/6 + 4/6 Now we just need to add them just like we add two fractions with equal denominators. ⅙ + 4/6 = (1+4)/6 = ⅚ Watch the fraction video How do we add/subtract mixed fractions? To add/subtract two mixed fractions we just need to convert the mixed fraction into improper fractions and then make the denominator the same and add/subtract them together. For example 2(1/2) + 3(1/2) = 5/2 + 7/2 = 12/2 = 6 Download Fraction Class 6 Worksheet I. Solve the following problems: Call @08045681010/8800999284
